Is this 2011 Tacoma a decent buy?

Also just found this truck. On CarGurus it says it’s over priced but not as far as I can see.

Anyone in the Pikeville, KY area?

    2013 Toyota Tacoma Regular Cab 4WD 4 cyl - $15,977 https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/share/250931861

Weird that a vin check shows this to be automatic. But the ad says 5 speed manual. I asked for more pictures because there’s only two crap ones.

Spoke to the dealer in Memphis about that TRD sport. He says there is some rust on the frame but on these years they “changed the metal” implying that they don’t rust out like the earlier ones. Not sure he knows much about these trucks. He also said it has an off road package with locking differentials. “Just put it in 4L and they’re all locked” he said.

FYI something I learned the hard way searching for a 6 speed, the only way to know for sure if it's a MT is to look at the interior pics and see the gear shifter. I found lots of trucks at dealers online that were listed as MT and ended up being automatic.

Yes, thanks. I asked for pictures of the interior so hopefully it’ll show a stick shift. But I also saw another Tacoma and the interior pictures were two different colors...two totally different cars...so sometimes pictures can only be part of the puzzle, haha.

It's shocking what the rebuilders in Oregon do.

There is a rebuilder car lot in my area that is well known for shady stuff. I was in a local highly respected body shop awhile ago and they had a 3rd gen Tacoma in there that was in a light front end collision. They pulled the bumper cover off and the mess under there was astonishing. It was previously "rebuilt" by that car lot. 1 frame horn was so out of place that the core support bolt didn't line up, so they left it out. The new core support was attached with self tapping screws. The radiator was held in with zip ties. The AC lines were not connected. The air bag sensors were missing. Obviously the insurance company totaled it after all that was discovered. I wonder if it got "rebuilt" again.

Bought a 2011 Ranger with 40K miles from Copart with a salvage title for $3,600. Fixed it for $2,000 and sold it for $10,000.

My buddy has a dealer license and my other friend owns a body shop. The truck was mint and to this day I regret selling it. I still see it on the road every once in a while. The new owner loves it.

Also have a salvage RZR from Copart. No one would ever know and it only cost us $10 Total to get it perfect.

My favorite is the 2016 Frontier we bought for $10,000 and sold to CarMax a week later for $17,000! It has a clean tire and minimal paint damage.

Salvage doesn’t mean anything if it’s repaired right. Save some money and buy from the auction directly and repair yourself. Never buy a vehicle that looks too good to be true

I was considering the 2017 that had a rebuilt title but first, the seller was very unresponsive. Only a couple word answers and even though I asked how it got totaled I the first place he ignored me. Also, I called a few of the main auto insurance companies and they said they don’t insure rebuilt titled cars in CT. If the guy was a little more vocal and it was easier and not terribly expensive to insure in CT I would have gotten it. Looked really nice. But also it was weird because it was a 4 cyl but had and older style TRD off road badge on the bed. The whole thing smelled fishy. Wish it was closer so I could have checked it out in person.

When something smells fishy, definitely run away. I would stay clear of “Rebuilt” because as mentioned earlier, there is a lot of resellers who carelessly and cheaply put vehicles together just to make a quick flip.

I only buy cars directly from insurance companies. Sometimes people will buy cars, put the bumper back on, take some pics and put them back in the auction. They look great but when examined closely, you will see frame damage, etc.

if you can’t see the vehicle in person, it’s pretty tough. Most times, the owner of the salvaged or rebuilt vehicle will not be able to tell you how it lost it’s clean title because they purchased it at the auction and the information is not disclosed.

I get vehicles with minor damage that looks worse than it actually is. I bought a Tacoma that had the front wheel all messed up but immediately, I knew that I only needed to replace the lower control arm to fix the issue. The frame and crash bar were perfect.

This is my favorite hobby and would be glad to share more info.

    Tacoma Access Cab 4WD - $12,495 - $12,495 on CarGurus at https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/share/255618539

Thoughts? Apparently it was a fleet vehicle.

Yeah, I’m not going to deal with anything like that. I’ll try not to at least.

That seems like a great option but finding a specific car seems like it would take a while. I’d be interested if m current truck didn’t have a somewhat compromised frame.

So this truck I just posted about was interesting. Either they or the previous owners/lien holders did an undercoat or paint job right over sand and dirt and rust. I could easily wipe away any paint and it would just fall off. Sorry for the sideways video.

    https://youtu.be/14vxUMQPhxE

Glad I went to look though. I do like these trucks and I dig the access cab with the 6’ bed. Good size for me.

Do yourself a BIG favor and don't buy a rebuilt title truck.
