Toytec lift, and extremely harsh ride?

I have a 2.5 inch Toytec lift, with longer springs and small spacers up front, and AAL in the rear. I installed them as soon as I got the truck, so I have nothing to compare to, but it seems as though the ride is much to harsh/bouncy. The front and rear both seem really stiff, and the truck bounces on even the smallest bumps, passengers always wonder if somethings broken. I have always just attributed it to being a truck and the lift kit, but is it normal to be very, very harsh and stiff? Is something wrong? It was installed professionally. I am strongly considering removing the lift kit very soon.

....go and test drive a new stock suspension taco ? I know with the toytec lift my ride was bumpy still but alot smoother and alot less bumpier than stock

 

Which lift is it exactly? Toytec makes adjustable coilovers as well as other lifting options. If you have lift springs w/ spacers on stock shocks then that might be a cause.

 

regular cab, access cab, double cab?

regular cab, being lighter, is going to get more bounced around by stiffer springs.

Yes, this is the kit I have. I was thinking of replacing the shocks, but I am not sure if it would help that much. It's an access cab, prerunner.

 

Its harsh because you have a spacer lift.

 

He does not have a "spacer lift" per se. He has OME 884 springs. The spacers in his setup are thin top-plate spacers, which do not affect the ride.

The harsh-riding spacer lifts you are thinking of are preload coil spacers.

 

^That's the impression I was under as well..............but something is definitely not right.

 

Well the ride is going to be stiff with the 884 springs but it shouldn't be that harsh.

Maybe your use to spongy trucks

I personally like a firm ride.

You can try and get some 5100's but it don't think it's going to sponge it up that much.

you can also take it to someone to check everything to make sure the shop installed it properly. You never know they might of put something on wrong.

 

5100's!! Your stock shocks are overextended.

 

Would that (overextension) make the ride stiff? i thought it had the opposite effect.

 

Oh yeah if your shock extends all the way out it's like hitting a bump stop but on the other end you have no shock to absorb the impact so every time you rebound you feel everything the wheels hit.

You want your shocks to have up travel as well as down travel.

If you picked up some 5100's and relieved some of that tension that the coil is putting on your shocks you would see a dramatic change in the ride.

 

Thanks, I think i am going to go that route. i like the lift, but if that's what's causing the ride quality, i will gladly remove it. Do they make 5100's for the rear too? or is that even necessary? It feels like the ride in the back is stiff too.

 

Get Bilsteins on all four corners...you will love'em. I do!

 

Check your tire pressure too. anything over 30-35psi will start getting harsher.

 

Ok, so i am getting really fed up with the quality of the ride, so I'm asking my fellow tacoma'ers, would I be better off removing the Toytec lift altogether, or replacing the shocks with 5100's? I relaize the shocks will obviously cost a lot more, but I'd rather keep my lift and have at least a decent ride, than remove it if its not necessary. Thanks.

 

Depends on what's currently on there?

I had the Bilstein OR shocks and Wow, those things are incredibly stiff in terms of rebound. The OME shocks I have were way easier and make the ride that much more enjoyable.

If you were to get shocks, I'd go OME just because with the springs you have, they go hand in hand with the OME shock. (Seeing as it's made by the same company.)

 

Yes, I have the stock, non-trd shocks on there still. Are the OMEs made for trucks with a lift though?
