exactly, it's basically the 4x4 Taco, but without the four wheel drive.

    a prerunner is a 2wd tacoma with 4wd suspension.

thats the best way to describe it......meaning its the same height as a 4wd tacoma.

designed for desert racing where a 4wd is more trail rated

I don't think that's what he was saying... I took his question to mean that you can't have a 4x4 Prerunner, which is correct. As you said, you certainly can have a non-4x4 that is not a Prerunner.

To put it another way, Toyota wanted to capitolize on people that like the looks of a 4wd vehicle without having to incur the initial cost of one. Hence, the Prerunner looks like a 4wd Taco but it is not4wd. They have standard bed, access cab, and double cab Prerunners. Prerunners are always badged as Prerunners and they lack the 4x4 rear mudflaps. Other than that, they look exactly like a 4wd Taco.

I think i read in the owners manual that if you turn the steering wheel with the toyota dif lock engaged it will auto disengage is that true? I have the trd off road but haven't had the oppertunity to test that statement.

The prerunner is basically the 4wd w/o the transfer case and front end...
It's basically the most capable stock 2wd truck in the world :D
