live been buying Yoda’s since the early 80’s. Many in my extended family before that and into the present. Compared to any of the big 3 makers, it is till leaps and bounds ahead in quality. YMMV...

Even the newly redesigned Ram has an optional “magic” tailgate

I never owned any Toyota vehicles before this truck- 2 GM and a Dodge were the previous trucks.

I was lucky enough to run the last two until they were junkyard worthy, and when my Dodge crapped out unexpectedly in Feb 16, I just looked around and the Toyota was the best new option at that moment.

So far, so good- a nice solid little truck that does what I need it to.

I guess I am lucky I don't have any history with the past "Toyota greatness"to compare this truck to...lol

Also lucky I didn't join this forum before making the purchase- again- lol.

A Dodge crapped out unexpectedly? Is that even possible?

If you don't have the personal comparison point, it doesn't affect the decision, or foment wistful nostalgia and disappointment. But I guarantee that early genners are not militant for arbitrary reasons.

Yea, Toyota does need to step it up. It’s been 3.5 years since I’ve been out of a Tacoma - but...

Do they have power seats yet? They didn’t have it in 2016 ....when I was shopping. It’s a shame... I was really looking forward to buying a 3rd gen when I discovered the lack of options. No power seats? Seriously? Can’t get black leather interior? Seriously?

I totally understand the need for a ‘basic’ truck without all the gadgets & options. However - some of us are older, our bodies ache, and we’ve busted our asses and can afford these ‘gadgets’ that make life easier for us. Don’t worry....someday you’ll understand.

Toyota could easily still offer the basic truck that ya’ll want..... but have the available options, packages, technology that the competitors already have. I’m only comparing midsize trucks.
STEP IT UP TOYOTA!! Competition is fierce....
I’ll be ready to shop again in a couple years. We’ll see what happens...

Sounds like a 2020 is what you want, you can get it with power black leather seats.

I assumed Toyota always left out power seats so Chevy could still sell mid-size trucks.

When I'm ready to buy another truck (a couple years) - we'll see how they all compare. I'm not brand loyal anymore.
I've had power black leather seats since 2016.

    Self-Leveling?

This is 1800 lb of concrete in my 2016 TRDOR.

Doesn't look bad to me, especially considering the circumstances.

DITTO and well said! I bought a 2020 TRD OR a couple of weeks ago. The dealer tried to push the headlight (or premium) package, and/or the technology package on me. Fortunately he had one (white) with none of the packages except for "all-weather mats" (overpriced but work well). I'm old for one thing and the truck is my daily and "Home Depot trip" vehicle so a lot of what is included in the various packages I don't need or even want. I don't fault all those (I assume much younger) Tacoma owners that get all these "packages" and I don't consider what they contain as "corny gimmicks...just not for me. However, I did add about $500 of extras such as Raptor rails, Toyota OEM bed mat, OEM S/S exhaust tip, OEM door sill protectors, OEM mud guards, and tailgate letters which might be corny to some.

When you move as many units as Toyota does with the Tacoma, you can sit back and laugh at the millions of dollars of R&D the domestics are pumping into their trucks combined with dismal profit margins. Toyota has the perfect strategy - create reliable, good looking trucks and people will flock. ONLY add features when absolutely necessary.

You know you think it’s funny, but skinny jeans with spandex are the shizzle. And I’m just an old boomer trying to stay relevant.

I don’t have a man bun but I have a hipster beard. Pairs well with an OffRoad.

You should only trust a brand for a reason. Sometimes the reason is they make reliable products that work as described.

I agree Toyo should have had power seats before now. Also Apple Car Play, etc. If that’s a deal-breaker for you, hey it’s your money. It’s not important for some of us. My seat fit me the moment I got into the truck and I have no reason to adjust it. Don’t need more electronics to fiddle with, more room in the backseat, more headroom, etc.

    But I’m glad there’s competition.

Just a thought, but the reason first gens were so dead reliable was they didn't have all the tech the new tacos have.

As a Limited owner, I am disappointed about the lack of chrome. Come on Toyota. I need to see my reflection on every possible surface of the truck.
