How does aftermarket alarm tie into factory keyless?

In my 2008 Taco I have the factory keyless entry without an alarm. I'm looking at getting an aftermarket alarm, something along the lines of this:

    http://www.viper.com/P-3305V/Viper-Responder-350-2-way-Security-System

Has anyone added an alarm to the factory keyless? Does the install just bypass the factory keyless or does it tie into it? I don't want to have 2 key fob's (and I'm sure I won't) and what about the starter kill?

I hope that where I get the alarm installed will do everything correct.

You should contact Viper directly and ask them.

Besides that - have you looked (and/or priced) a Toyota factory alarm system? Atleast with the Toyota system, it was designed to work with the keyless and you know it'll work with it. Just a thought....

The last time I checked it was quite expensive, somewhere around $550 JUST for the alarm. Don't quote me, this is just what I *think* I remember my friend that worked at a toyota dealer telling me.

I'm kind of looking for a more robust system. My truck is stock now, but for work I take the commuter bus and my truck is left at the park and ride all day so when I start adding stuff, I just want something with a little more features.

My buddy got that system, it's horrible lol. It never works right, he had a viper on his frontier and it worked flawlessly.

That's what my guess was. I don't mind that as long as it doesn't have to be ripped out of the truck.

I've always been a fan of Viper too, always had good stuff.

I got a Clifford alarm (same company makes Clifford and Viper) and the installers left the factory keyless system in it. The OEM system still works, but I always just use the Clifford remote and it locks/unlocks the doors like the factory fob and arms the alarm.

Really? I have a similar system in my 4Runner set up the same way and I had it for about a year already and no problems. Hopefully I don't have to bring it back or they might charge me another $50 :(

I had the Viper 5900 w/stock keyless system still installed for well over 3 years...never had a problem...

I'm upgrading to the Viper Smart Start in a week...

I did the entire install myself and will be doing the install of the Smart Start as well...:D I'll post up a video to show how both work together without any problems once the Smart Start setup is installed; I'll be tying it into my tonneau cover as well...

Thanks everyone for the information. Ill be installing a new Viper very soon, then I'll feel more comfortable about installing some audio and leaving the truck at the park and ride with a little more piece of mind.

Really sucks that having all these low life thieves out there.

I have a 5701 with extra sensors. It neither replaces nor is tied into the factory alarm. It just ties into the wiring harness and is its own thing. You can still lock and unlock with factory remote but that wont work the Viper alarm. In fact you can arm my factory alarm and open the door and the facotry alarm will go of and not the Viper alarm. If the VIper alarm goes off the factory alarm does not. THe reality of the situation is you will just put away your factory alarm remotes forever. The remote start will require a bypass module. You will lose your valet key to run this module as it will be permanantly mounted inside the alarm to allow you to get around the ingnition defeat.

    My alarm is as follows:

    Viper 5701
    glass break sensor
    motion sensor with defeat switch
    pin switch on the hood
pin switch on the tail gate
    backup battery

the 2 stage shock sensor is integrated to the alarm
the unit has remote start and 1 mile range

Whatever you want to know ask me. I programmed my installers remote for him. I know some guys at a local custom vehicle shop and I got the whole thing installed for $515. That is below normal prices.

That's a nice setup! I do want to get the hood and tailgate pins too. I won't be getting remote start though. I called a local shop here in the Seattle area and they gave me an estimate of about $350 for the one I was looking at.

I appreciate the information for sure and might come back with some other questions.

If you get as many sensor options as me be sure they are all on seperate lines. Installers will try to cheap out by tying multiple sensors into one sensor bank so your remote cant tell you what exactly was the alarm trigger. They have a custom name for the sensors they can program or can simply activate default names. Good installers will actually do what in necessary to allow seperate trigger names or at least seperate triggers. FOr example some installers will tie in all trigger pins to one line... the negative, aside from not knowing which pin was setting it off is that if one pin is not working the alarm will sense its not working when armed and it kills that sensor bank, ignoring all sensors tied to that line. Also if it goes off due to storms and lets say your glass break and motion detection were tied in together, if one goes off too often the computer will ignore that sensor from then on to avoid your alarm being annoying. Thus someone could smash your window and youd never know. If you live in very hot or cold climate the remote start is a God send. I highly reccomend it and its the best feature of my alarm IMO.

Cool, thanks for the tip about the pins. I'll be sure to tell the installer before they install it.

I'm not completely sold on the remote start. I live in Seattle so the area is not over hot or cold and my truck is parked under a carport at home. I don't see a need to pay the extra cash for that yet.
