Manual transmission Fan Club and BS thread (All Generations Welcome)

Mid-engine cars have been made with manual trans behind the engine. Pantera immediately comes to mind, also 512 BB Ferrari I think.

 

The Ford GT had it as well as Porsche too.

 

Yeah it has, but I think it was more because they put the trunk in behind the engine as well so there isn't a whole lot of extra space back there. Or it might just be some BS excuse, or a structural issue like others said, etc etc.

 

I don't believe that they can't put an MT In there if they wanted too.

 

There already is a manual transmission in there. It is just automated. This is becoming more common. No more 3rd pedal and flaps instead of shifter lever, the the foundation is still a standard transmission.

 

I was watching Wheeler Dealers the other night and they bought a BMW to convert from Automatic to Manual. Never seen anything like it before, the automatic was in reality a Manual with a few solenoids on it. The conversion was stupid simple, ripped off the old solenoids and had to drill a hole in the bellhousing, bolt a Clutch pedal into the spot already in the pedal box, and have the ECU burned for Manual software. There was already a clutch, flywheel, and TO bearing in there.

 

I will have to look that up. That sounds pretty cool.

Dual-clutch is a fancy name for an automatic sans torque converter. Where is the clutch pedal?

For anyone on here looking for a good shift knob, I just put on trd shift knob and what a difference. Made my shifts smoother and made my truck fun to shift again.

 

A true dual clutch Transmissions is more closely related to a manual than an Automatic transmission. Some manufacturers stick flappy paddles on vehicles with autos and think it's the same. It's just an Automatic.

I understand how they work. I still don't consider them "manual" transmissions. They don't have a clutch pedal or Shift lever to change gears. Big commercial trucks have been using automated manuals for years but they are still automatic. They do all the shifting for you, therefore I consider them a type of automatic.

You found a MT TRD Pro knob with the clip for the shift boot?

 

the TRD pro knob has the clip for the shift boot. Mine did when I got it 2.5 years ago. You can buy them first from Toyota.

 

Mine had the boot clip too.
