Help settle an argument with my wife? Opinions needed!

Can the good members of TW help settle an argument between my wife and I?

She insists that you need to allow the food to cool to room temperature before putting it into the fridge. She believes that if you put the food into the fridge hot it will spoil faster.

Being of sound mind and logical thinking. (Typical male) I can't reason how this might be possible? I say the sooner you get it into the fridge the better!
I say she is wrong! (So you know I'm currently preparing for WWIII)LOL!!

So what do you guys and gals think? (Oh? And WHY?)

Does food spoil faster if you place it into the refrigerator hot?

Thats a myth. My mother and mother in law both thought the same thing. I work in the food industry and the health department actually requires that hot food that is ready to be stored be split into smaller portions and put in the refrigerator immediately. Letting it sit at room temperature allows bacteria to grow.

Bacteria multiply faster at or near room temperature, but if you put the food in the fridge right away, you are heating everything already in the fridge and wasting energy. Seems to me that the best is to let it cool a bit- not quite to room temp- then put it in the fridge.

Something hot put directly in the fridge isnt going to heat up the fridge very much, everything is going to stay cool and never reach a temperature where bacteria can develop. Food can be relatively hot and still develop bacteria and thus its best to put it in right away.

I leave piza out all day and night though. LOL. Im just lazy to put it away and usually eat it for breakfast anyway.

I had the same argument the two days ago... she wants it to cool down before we put the food away and I wanted to just put it away... happy wife is a happy life, so i dropped it... she then proceeded to forget to put it in the refrigerator and I found it on the counter in the morning... epic fail

 

It depends on the type of container and how hot the food is. If you use a tupperware or hefty type container and the food is very hot, the steam will build up pressure and possibly pop the lid off which would allow the food to spoil quicker, refrigerated or not. I agree that you shouldn't let it cool to room temperature, however, it should be allowed to cool a little so the lid stays on tight when refrigerated.

Lol I wonder what your wife would say if you asked her to explain exactly why food spoils faster if you put it in the fridge hot.

 

I would say whatever wife says si right if you want to get puddin.. but i dont think it really matters

Technically you may be correct but in reality just make her feel as if she is right and you'll end up a winner. Just give in and don't bother with it.
