Well, it seems the government saw fit to extend my coverage until 2026. Wow, they must really be concerned. I called to extend the contract but found it had already been done by OPM. The information hacked was............... EVERYTHING!

Interestingly enough, the service provides me with Sex Offender Alerts around my neighborhood. I wont reveal any names of people on this site, but you know who you are.

I'm sure if you don't plaster your social security number on billboards all across the country, their service is half decent.

LifeLock is hands down the best in the business (IMO). There's a reason they are used and recommended by nearly every bank, broker dealers, and fiduciaries.
Data breaches are not something that LifeLock can control (even if you publically blast your social security number on a billboard). The service is about immediate reactions to breaches, data anomalies, and publicized private information on the dark web.

Fair enough. Just found it funny that his service allowed him to get his identity stolen that many times. That being said most people don’t advertise their social everywhere.

No identity theft service can 100% prevent an identity from being stolen unless the service had control over the identity, which is impossible if you are broadcasting your social security number on an billboard, as there's no technical preventive measure that will obfuscate a pained-on billboard. Being a customer of any identity theft service is all about masking, blocking, detecting, and alerting cyber threats. The machine learning, BI, and pseudo-AI built into LifeLock is impressive to say the least (and that's one of the software fields I specialize in). And their reimbursement process is stupid easy in the event you are compromised. Zero affiliation, just a very happy customer, especially after the Equifax breach.

No one can prevent theft. It's what you do about it afterwards.

Are they affordable? I’m considering it. I haven’t been a victim of any identity theft (besides my email being used to spoof, I was part of the Adobe compromise).

Depends on what your definition of affordable is. 10 bucks a month for up to $25k coverage. $30 a month for up to $1M of coverage.
I pay less per month for my whole family than one bar tab on a Friday night.

Tundra still needs bumps and especially tires (at minimum) before it is fit to take out there. Daughter, hearing this, graciously loaned me her truck for the weekend. :anonymous:

ID Experts is the service the Gov enrolled me in, and since they're paying through 2026 I think I'll go with it. Have you heard anything about these guys, @jberry813

Identity Theft Guard Solutions won the DoD and OPM identity theft protection contract a couple years back due to OPM's breach, which is why you got it for free. Identity Theft Guard Solutions is a DBA for ID Experts. My opinion, if it wasn't for their government contract win, they wouldn't even exist anymore. Software reminds me of a college senior project.

Well crap. So, I guess it's worth every penny I'm paying for it. So, you're suggesting I still look into Life Lock?

    LifeLock, Identity Guard, or IdentityForce

They all are top notch but some have better advantages depending on your situation, what you want covered, and who all you want covered.

The personal information lost was, as noted earlier, EVERYTHING. I was getting my Top Secret clearance with the Navy prior to a deployment to Afghanistan. Major background investigation. Since then, however, only one issue, and that was recent. My iPhone was compromised, and my account was transferred to another carrier without my permission. That was a two week pain in the ass, with limited, to little service. Then, not two weeks later, someone got into my Credit Union account and changed my Password, and my Security Questions. No money was touched, thankfully. And I don't keep passwords on my phone so probably they weren't related. So, since 2015 nothing but those two incidents. Not sure what I really need.

There was actually two OPM breaches in 2015. The second was the one that was stolen from the background investigation database.
You might be surprised what showed up on the dark web after that one:

    ScreenHunter 17.jpg

The dark web notifications were all Chinese servers (Chinese hackers were responsible for the OPM breach).

It's no difference than any other kind of insurance. You don't need it until you need it. And you can't go back and get life insurance after you are already dead.

If financially you don't have anything to lose, I understand that mentality. But the OPM breach wasn't just social security numbers. It was addresses, birth place, dates, fingerprints, username and passwords in plain text (especially shitty for those that re-use username/passwords across multiple platforms), background docs, etc.

At the end of the day, I only know what my and my family needs are and what assets need protection. It's like shopping for a new vehicle. Some people need a car, others need a truck, others should have their license revoked.
