Then the next step is, figure out if you want manual hubs or ADD.

After that, decide if you want to use your existing spindles, or buy a used set (whether online, forum craigslist, or salvage yard).

Then purchase the remaining items such as a transfer case (better if you find a transmission already paired to it), axles to match your ADD/manual hub, and front differential.

    During the process of finding parts, I would also buy all necessary items you'll end up needing/using such as;

    drain and fill bolts
    gaskets
    fluids
    etc.

That way, once you've acquired let's say, a transfer case, you can take it apart and replace for instance the drain/fill plugs, washers, gaskets, etc.

Same for axles; if you find a used set of OEM's, reboot/rebuild them

And again for manual hubs if you go that route; new gaskets, o ring, grease, etc.

You have to tear down the entire transmission into its bare components. This is a 10/10 on the difficulty scale if you don’t know what you’re doing. Not worth it.

Ok I'll find a transmission with a transfer case, and I'll do manual hubs. Should I just source spindles also?

You need to get steering knuckles with the right hub in it. You can’t run manual hubs in an ADD knuckle and vice versa.

    Where are you located?

I bet you can find a yard, or a member on here, that will either have some of the components you're looking for, or all of them.

It's easier to quote people, that way if you have a question, you're not sitting waiting for a reply and others get a notification.

    Here's a nice schematic -

Again, axles for ADD and manual hub are different and not interchangeable however, the boot kit to rebuild them is the same.

Spindle and Knuckle are colloquially used. The knuckle is what your wheel mounts to.

I’m thinking about doing the conversion as well. What’s a good price for the transmission with the transfer case? I found one with the front drive shaft for 600 bucks

Aside from the vehicle speed sensor, that could differ from your truck and a donor truck, I think the PCM has something to do with your swap as well.

I'm not 100% on that, just thought I read about it somewhere...

I sourced the parts and took the transmission to a shop. They charged me $200 in labor to swap the parts. Didn’t seems worth tearing open the transmission myself since I didn’t know what I was doing just to save $200.

The swap really isn’t all that hard, especially if you just get a 4wd transmission and you go manual hubs and stick shift t-case. It’s about 90% bolt on.

    FIFY

That's especially true if you go j-shift and manual hubs.

That's probably true on a first gen. On the 2nd gen, you need to cut a hole in the floor for the shifter and you need to modify the transmission cross member.

Haha yea. Interestingly, the 2.7L 2nd gen is pretty similar to the 1st gen. It uses the same transmission. So a lot of my 4wd conversion research started in 1st gen threads.

What years of AT 4*4 transmissions will work for my 01 prerunner v6?
