    Dear TW,

I have isolated a whine/drone noise to the rear right wheel bearing, so that will be getting replaced. My mechanic quoted me $828, which seems crazy - but it's all due to the OEM bearing being $470?!

    Price varies wildly online...

Here one is that price but discounted https://parts.longotoyota.com/oem-p...BcdhFl5GNsKKueB_N_PHQYfSZhb9sHjYaAhtGEALw_wcB

Here is one for $300 less..https://www.sixityauto.com/timken-r...embly-2005-2016-toyota-tacoma-2096172351.html

Should I go OEM, or is 3rd party ok?

    Thanks,

I'm in the boat. Dealership had my truck. They wanted $1100 with new wheel sensor, that i replaced 4 months ago.

Looking for a cheaper route. I seem to be doing the same research as you. All because my $9 rear axle seal is leaking onto my sensor.

Same cost as the suspension i'm looking for. I cant seem to spend $2200 if both sides need bearings.

The rear bearing is pressed on the axle.
The rear drum and brake assembly has to come off.
Unbolt the bearing assembly and pull the axle out.
Then figure out how to get the bearing off the axle.
Might as well replace the axle seal while you are there.
My axle seal was leaking and I had to pull all the same parts as doing the bearing.

Maybe pull the axle yourself and pay a shop to press the bearing?

I'm not sure how you would remove the bearing with out a press?
I just hope my rear bearing last as long as I own my truck. Lol

$400 in mechanic labor can buy a lot of tools, including a press if you are willing and able to do it yourself, I understand some people don't want to.

I search several overseas sources whenever buying OEM parts, they are cheaper for a lot of things but you also pay higher freight and there are some items that are cheaper to buy from US based dealers like brake parts (pads & rotors) for some reason. They are also typically better stocked for world market vehicles which the tacoma is not one of (tacoma is north america only).

the sites are partsouq, amayama, megazip, and carmarka

$800ish is what another member recently paid to have a rear serviced here in UT. Sounds accurate at shop rates.

Don’t be stupid, if you attempt this yourself, read the FACTORY service manual first. Do it wrong and you will be buying a new axle.

disregard if you have the experience doing this.

No f'in way I'm doing this myself. I have very little experience and my time is much better spent elsewhere.

It was more an OEM vs 3rd party question.

I had to do this repair on my last 4Runner and the guy at the counter explained it like this, "your OEM bearing lasted 195,000 miles, what else do you need to know?" In short, Pay the extra cash man, it's a pain to replace so use quality parts.

Toyota sources bearings from Koyo so it should be cheaper to get direct from them

I would add Timken to that list, toyota also sources bearings from them. I don’t who supplies the rear.

    Rockauto has Timken for $109.

    Partsgeek has koyo for $148

If you go to rockauto and scroll through the photos of the Timken bearing assembly it actually has a koyo bearing in it. I would have no issues rocking that the OEM is probably the same thing in a Toyota box.

The above sounds familiar. Try a search. IIRC there is a post here where someone got the rear bearings from NAPA and it was the same bearing as OE.

I replaced my rear bearings in 2014 with "Timken" bearings. Inside the Timken box was a Koyo bearing which which had the exact same part number as OEM Koyo bearing I removed.

5 years later, still going strong.

Timken 512294 Axle Bearing and Hub Assembly (Left)
Timken 512295 Axle Bearing and Hub Assembly (Right)

At the time, they were about $115 each.

Well I went OEM and it cost an arm and a leg. My my truck sounds so smooth now (better than the day I bought it) and I have confidence in my back end. Sussed!
