It’s an R-156 instead of the R-155 in the 2nd gen. The ratios are slightly different.

Haha 10/4 check out my build for a hard working 2.7 I have an update to post, soon probably drunkenly after Friday night football

Well then, why mess with a good thing though. The r155 is basically bomb proof imo

idk. I think it’s basically the same but with lower ratios like the R-151

I'll have to remember to see a comparison, not that it matters I won't buy a 3rd gen. I'm just curious

I like to think I got the last of the “good Tacoma’s” by getting the 2.7 5spd 2017 lol. That 2.7 is a brute, it’s the tranny i’m concerned about and why I need to regear so badly.

All these people scared to run higher rpms on the freeway makes me laugh my ass off lol. It’s 3k folks, not 5k for 6 hours round trip..

We’ll see how she does with 35s + 5.29 if I go that route. It’s moreso me not wanting to spend the money on suspension upgrades for 35s - a regear is happening ASAP no matter what I do.

You can get 35s on a ome 3" lift. You don't have to get Fancy. It more the cutting that scares ppl

Very true! I’ve cut a lot already and cmc, so no stranger to a grinder, razor blade
    and heat gun.

285 on stock suspension right now, minor rubbing

Cutting is the fun part! (if you do it right..)

    2016+ 5spd manual trans - R 156F

"A triple cone synchronizing mechanism has been adopted for the 1st gear for reducing shifting effort. A carbon synchronizing mechanism has been adopted for the 2nd gear for improved durability. A wide gear range has also been adopted."

Lower 1st and second, higher 5th.

The 3rd gen 2.7L manual is a dog with bigger tires primarily because of the 3.909 axle ratio. Regearing makes a huge difference.

In my opinion if you are going to run 33's forever get the 4.88's. If you are going 35's you will be miserable without 5.29's.

I found some 4.30 for cheap, planning on throwing those in my 3rd gen AC manual and running 265/75/16. Right now running the stock 245/75s and 3.90s. I dont plan on ever going bigger than 265.75 I should be ok , yeah?

Sounds good to me.... 265s came stock on the trd off road so it's technically a stock size, if you got ahold of some diffs and wanna do the work I say go for it, this shit is addictive though. I said I'd never put 35s or mud tyres on my truck and we'll yeaaaa. If you're unhappy with the current setup I'd change it till you're happy, cause you gotta love with it

You’re crazy. I’m running 255/85’s with 4.88’s and can barely merge into highway traffic. If there’s a headwind, maintaining 70mph is a struggle.

With 4.88 maintaining 70 is a struggle? Hmmmm. Idk, with my stock 3.92 I’d just drop into 4th around 2800rpm and it held just fine with 285s. But we do agree anything less than 4.88 + 33 is no bueno if you actually intend to use 5th gear for flats

Yea sure if you drop down a gear. But that’s not exactly the way it should be. Why change rear end gearing at all then? Just run 3rd gear instead.

Yea. I’d like to check it out. You throw a 1° ant hill in front of mine and I pretty much have to do a 1st gear tractor pull up it. (Exaggeration but it’s pretty bad. Even my wife makes fun of how slow my truck is....)

Tuned in what way? It’s been slow since it was new. Going up two tire sizes only made it worse. Jumping to 4.88’s made it a little more tolerable, but it’s still really slow. On 4.10’s it wouldn’t even have been drivable.

Oh yea. Plugs and wires are good. Replaced them recently. I mean it runs good. It’s just slow as hell. I can get on the pipe and rev it to the moon to get a little life out of it. It’s just so much work to make it come alive.

I’m planning a manual swap sometime in the next year and some headers. Maybe the intake spacer if I can recreate one.
