Yeah, gosh, it makes you long for the good ole' days of the Cold War, doesn't it? Things were so much more clearcut and simple. A slow, boring chess game of posturing, setting up and knocking down a few third world "governments," plenty of opportunity for crews and troops to drill and practice...we never realized how good we had it.

CIWS will shoot down anything in the air, be it missiles, air craft, and (from what my CIWS tech friend told me) even 5" rounds from other ships. Newer versions of CIWS have an IR camera on them that allow an operator to manually control them. It's not unheard of for CIWS to be used in an anti-small boat role when they are manually controled.

CWIS is last ditch effort to shoot down incoming missiles if you have to use it the ship is taking damage. And damn it need alot of maintenance if its even working. Sea Sparrows or main gun is a better choice if you ask me.

I knew FFG's were on the way out. The last one I saw had its missile launcher removed (but still had both CIWS mounts) and I commented to one of her crew that she's no longer really an FFG anymore, she's really just an FF. Ohh boy, if looks could kill.

nah probably not...FFG have purely defensive weapons...NO MISSILES!

the best they could do is send a helicopter after them... or shoot at them with their limited range CIWS (if they have a working one)...

FFG's are old and worn out... they primarily serve as missile sponges for Aircraft Carriers or anti-drug ops.

Your right about maintaining the things, they were a PITA. When they were in auto, they always reminded me of ED-209 from Robocop. One never knew what was going to set them off, you just hoped that they were not pointing at you when they decided to open up.

I've seen a couple boats equipped with RAM launchers, the CIWS's heir-apparent. Your average CIWS mount had enough ammo onboard to kill 2 - 3 targets, then it is a 30 minute reloading process. RAM launchers cary 21 missiles. Even if they launch 2 missles per target, that is 10 - 11 kills before reloading. Nice upgrade in fire power.
