Anything welding

I've never bought argon in the US before. I don't normally go thought very much gas. A single Q cylinder (80cf) lasts me months. Should I buy or rent? I've searched online for this question but most of the results are very old.

Are you welding aluminum so you need straight argon?

 

No, I have a BOC DC tig welder. Also it's a 220v 50Hz machine that I bought when I lived in Australia. I tried to sell it before I left but here I am. I haven't actually welded anything with it on 60Hz but I let a friend borrow it who said it worked just fine on 60Hz.

 

Herpaderp. I can tig anything but pipe. Life sucks. Keep practicing lol.

 

Can i use a chop saw blade on a miter saw? Or are there metal cutting blades for miter saws that are any good? I want to cut some metal pipe and i have a couple miter saws. So if something could work with those id rather do that than buy a new chop or band saw. Could should look into it myself but info here is usually good so asking here first

 

Metal cutting saws spoon much slower than a miter saw. Wouldn’t be a good idea to do what you are asking

 

Spoon? And okay whats better option, cheap band saw or chop saw? Just want to cut like 1.5in pipe 3in tube 45-90 deg. for exhausts and bumpers and that jazz

 

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a reasonably priced abrasive shop saw that cut straight. Which is right for you depends on a lot of different factors. Personally I’d rather have the cheap band saw (it most likely won’t cut straight either, but usually that can be adjusted to cut pretty well). Otherwise I’d also check out cold cut saws.

 

I tried this years ago. The cut off wheel worked good for about 10 cuts. After that the cut off wheel glazed. It would not cut without really putting downward pressure on the blade.

Shortly after that the "magic smoke" escaped from the motor.

Into the scrap pile it went.

After doing the cmc on the taco I decided to take on a bigger project. Thanks to harbor freights $100 mig welder. Not bad!

 

Yea for big tools, quality and reasonable price don't go together anymore. I don't mind spending a bit to have good stuff but it seems like every company that knows they make good shit love to jack the prices up

Just how much cutting do you need to do??

Is this for your self a few projects or planning on making it a side job?

Working in the field for years I got really good using the 4 1/2" grinder for all the cutting.

Still my go to for making a few cuts despite having everything but a Evil Chop Saw in the shop

Then I got a deep Cut Porta band that handled all the field cutting chores a Torch was not practical .

 

I have the Rage 3, and after breaking the fence in half, then rebuilding it with 1/4" angle iron, its been good. And better spots for my "F" clamps.

I just need to sit down and think of a jig that will allow me to cut tube safely, then I'll be golden for my little projects.

YMMV, but I've trashed more then one blade because I did not clamp my work ( held it with my hand ) IMO, the metal blades do not like side to side movement while cutting.

also the chips! little buggers go everywhere! Personal Protection is a must! I bought a full face shield because of it, I got tired of having them hit me in the face.

 

the rage 3 is a different setup than the rage 2, but I’m sure it’s a good saw. I just wanted a simple chop saw.

I have only cut trim for my house with it thus far (120 tooth wood blade) but it has been great. Hoping to get in the garage to cut some 14 and 11 gauge tubing this weekend.

 

I used an abrasive wheel on my dad's dewalt and it worked okay, but you need to remove all the plastic covers or they will melt. This was only cutting a bunch of 3/16" 1x1 angle. It was definitely annoying to work with.

I got this for light work, and I have loved it. Cut DOM and square tube with it. Can even cut a 4x3 rect tube in a single cut if its a straight cut.
