I guess it will keep spray off the body, but the fronts are so much closer to the ground than the back..

    What front mud flaps? Lol
One of mine left on its own.
If you plan to go Off Road, you can’t take them off yourself.
Or let the trail do it for you.

You can easily trim them down while they’re attached, takes 5 minutes.

    Done for DOT legality purposes.

according to law the mud flaps must be either to the mid of the axle or below.

some states don’t care others will write you for “defective equipment” if you don’t have em.

there are alternatives, like fender flairs with integrated mud flaps and such.

If they are DOT mandated, they would come from the dealer with them installed. States can make laws that are more stringent than Federal DOT rules, but again, if they are required equipment per the state, they would have to be installed prior to sale.

these are specific to each state and mirror the DOT regs. BOTH commercial AND private use are subject to these requirements.

The 3gen fenders are different than the second gen. Stock pics show a more tucked appearance from the rear. Which would clear the reg for “splash guards”

the rule is either fenders or flaps must cover or come to the top or mid of the rear axle.

my 15 without the flaps showed more axle which would’ve been an additional write up if stopped.

I have only had 1 run in with this personally, I was driving like a twat and the WSP pulled me for no mud flaps...MOVING VIOLATION. It seems to be more enforced on commercial vehicles than POVs.

Here is some light reading material to clarify the issue.

In summary, as long as your tacoma has fenders, and those fenders cover the full width of the tire, you're good in any of the 50 states. Mud flaps are not needed.

I just cut off enough of the fronts so that they are the same distance from the ground as my rears.
