My friend is a master Toyota mechanic and I asked him, he said at 4, every time I’ve filled up right when the light comes or pretty close to it’s been like 17.3 gallons.

Filled up yesterday, 18.188 gallons. 397.7 miles. No light was on at the time. DTE showed 37 miles. Making me wonder now about my low fuel light....

I have noticed the fuel light and miles to empty seem purposefully "idiot proof" in most new vehicles.... meaning you can go farther than it says.

Generally you should fill up before it gets too low. As you drive around the gas sloshes. If you do it often enough the fuel pump could suck air instead of fuel and eventually fail. Way easier to get gas more often than worry about replacing a fuel pump.

LOL, no. Gas tanks are designed with baffles to prevent this. If this happened, you'd notice your engine stumbling going around corners when low on gas. And also, preemptively, driving until the gas light is on, or further (until you actually run out of gas) won't damage the fuel pump either.

OP, it's a 21.2 gallon tank, and the light comes on around roughly 18 gallons burned. You've got about another gallon before it says "distance to empty 0, please refuel". (This is 19 gallons burned.) You have two more gallons to go!

The most I've ever managed to put in is 20 and some change.

You've got fair distance until it's actually empty after the light comes on. At least another 50-60 highway miles. Found that out last weekend driving through Wyoming.....coasted in on fumes

It's been proven it does even with baffles. But hey, run it low, I was just trying to be helpful.

My 2nd gen will fill up between 16.5-18.5 gallons with the light recently on. I usually go another 30-50 miles with the light on depending on convenience or price.

Once, while driving a sienna for the shuttle at a toyota dealership I used to work at; I left to pick a guest up with the light on. I drove waaay past the 0 miles till empty, and put 19.9 gallons in the tank, no joke. They have a 20 gallon fuel tank per google. No surging or any noticable effects while driving.

    A few.
On the 2nd gens that is correct. On the 3rd gen they reduced the fuel reserve size about 1 gallon.

I was thinking they could be different. One time I got 19.2 on a full up and I thought for sure it was empty cause the yellow light had been yelling at me for what seemed like forever.

I think it is still 2 gallons based on my experience.

Ouch 14 mpg. What area of the country do you live and what type of driving conditions?

Yikes, the dash is that far off? In my F150 I noticed it's about 1-2 mpg higher vs hand calculation.

I've never seen the low gas light on ever. I've driven down to 10 miles left and assumed there was no warning light.
