The good thing is you didn’t start your truck, so this is just like doing a transition oil change.

if you plan on doing oil changes on your own, get a fumoto valve and this issue will never occur again

Still cant figure this one out. How not to be able to tell the difference between the oil and tranny drain plugs.

Crap happens. We see these things every now and then on here. Take the $250 hit and move on, all is well that ends well.

I'm absolutely not judging here...did the same on my wife's Rav4. Ive never changed the oil on mine since the dealer changes mine for free...but I've been under mine, just looking around...seems the tranny plug is close to 2 ft behind the oil plug.
    Am I missing something here?

Did the same thing on my wife’s Camry back in 2012. Haha I did realize it was tranny fluid as it was draining because it had the red tint to it. Car only had 20k miles and it was already pretty dirty looking so I changed it anyhow. My screw up ended up being a good thing haha.

That’s what I’m saying the tranny drain plug is attached to this big silver thing called the transmission about 2feet behind the oil drain plug that’s attached to this big black thing called the engine block and the the drain plugs aren’t even the same. So confused :confused:

The procedure to check the level isn't horrible but it isn't really easy, have the dealer do it. if you only got 2-3q out theres probably enough in there to drive a short distance safely.

Here's hoping the dealership gets you out of your unfortunate situation.

Dealer will claim 12 or more qts. needed for full flush(true) and charge $12-$15 a qt. ATF and labor will be closer to $300(maybe more). Being a 12. yr. old truck, dealer will recommend $2K in maint. work.

I did it once in college, to a girlfriend's car. When i went to check the oil after putting in 4 quarts, i was like - whoa, why is the oil level so high on the dipstick...

    Doh!

I’d like to know if your receipt says oil and filter or just oil. My wife got free oil changes, too but judging by the filter I pulled out I’m going to say they never, ever changed the filter (not Toyota but another make). I’d be very interested to see your trucks filter

This is why you always mark the filter before taking it in to the dealership if you go that route. And upon pickup you dont start the thing till you pop the hood, check oil level (and clarity for new oil) and a new oil filter.

Had them replace the Fram I had just put on with an OEM YZZD3 for which they charged $5.41, visually checked. Also 5qt oil at $2.99 per, also checked. I can't complain about that!

Done worse. Back in my early days of drinking and smoking, was distracted by a friend and forgot to put drain plug back in sump. Doesn’t take much imagination what happened next.
