Engine Damage or Transmission?

It’s simple. Plug it into your OBD port, run the wire under the dash/steering column to the left side kick panel, then back up under the dash and up the side of the steering column cover. It’s held on with velcro tape which is included. It can be easily unplugged anytime. Does that make sense?

The only reading you have to setup is the ATF, is simple as well. Everything else is preprogrammed.

Took truck to new shop.
Guy hooked it up to the machine and was able to get the transmission to hiccup while hooked up. Looked over the perimeters and asked if I’ve replaced the transmission speed sensor. Told him no. He said the sensor is telling the transmission it’s going 0mph which would explain the jump from 3rd to 1st for example. Bought and replaced TSS, test drive, no improvement. Took it back he hooked up and confirmed that the sensor was working while off and cold, but stopped working when the truck heated up. Something like that. He kept the truck for another week messin with it and eventually called and said, “only one other time in my career have I NOT been able to isolate or pin point a problem” he also said, “dude, you have the truck from hell” every time he was able to get the truck to malfunction he’d start to investigate and then it would stop and start malfunctioning somewhere else. He said it was like a “gopher” playing games. Nothing consistent and all over the place.

 

Got a deal on a used ECU online. Got delivered today,installed after work and still was having issues. Where the issue happens is always different but the ECU was not the end all be all. Considering replacing the transmission control module before rolling the dice on a new transmission.


Anyone know anything about TCM? I believe it’s inside the trans itself?

anyone know a good place to check out if I was interested in buying one?

Is the TCM worth it or should I just bite the bullet and replace the trans at that point?

@gearcruncher you got any advice? I know you were hesitant based on the goose chase that got me here but any input or advice will be greatly appreciated.

 

Also, gunna drive the truck for the next 2 days and see how the truck responds with the new ECU. Get a symptom update while i daily it. Planning to go through and clean the ground points tomorrow.

 

is the pcm also in the ECU?

Not trying to confuse anybody . In the early days Toyota called it a TCM or transmission control module
Some of these transmissions had a separate ECU ( electronic control unit ) hidden behind the dashboard specific to the transmission and nothing to do with the engine .
I would have to get into your factory FSM for your truck to tell you better .
In late model trucks , the transmission computer is combined with the engine computer ...PCM ( powertain Control Module )

 

okay that makes sense. I knew they were separated on later models but was confused as to what was separated and when they all merged into 1 unit.
