The FlipPac info thread.

So happy to stumble across some fellow FlipPac Brothers (Sisters)!!! And just wanted to say hi and keep up with conversations here.
I'm here in Colorado, I've pretty much torn down are rebuilt my entire setup.
Hope no one hates on me to much for not having a Taco...

The replacement Torsion bar is $299 from sway away. Website says 5 in stock. I found it interesting that they also have upgraded hardware for the torsion bar where it mounts to the Flippac. That’s also $299.

 

I actually bought the SwayAway bar when I was rebuilding my FlipPac. I had to put the old bar back in place before the new bar showed up. The new bar has been riding in my truck, waiting for the old bar to break. Fingers Crossed!

The fact they are selling new mounts makes me wonder if SwayAway changed the size of the spline drive on the bar.
Either way, I wouldn't replace the hardware if you don't need to. It's a real pain to get the top lined up with the bottom after you remove them.
I figured it would be easy, but you need the bar in place, which means there's tension on the bar.
If anyone has dealt with this, I'd love to hear what tricks you used.

 

Block and tackle suspended from the ceiling of the workshop to hold the lid vertically. Anything else is sanity crushing.

 

That's how you replace the torsion bar itself. And totally agree
At least the question I was asking was, if you replace the torsion bar mounts, how do you get the top in line with the bottom. If it's off by .5" it'll rub on of the latches that holds it down while driving.

 

Don’t snug the front bolts until the bar is loaded into the splines. Then knock them into the correct angle with a deadblow before tightening them all down.

 

The replacement sway away bar that I got from the previous owner has a different spline, it looks like the spline count is the same but the actual splines are a little fatter so it doesn't fit correctly. From what I've heard people have fixed this issue but filing down the splines to fit. I haven't replaced my bar yet because I've been too lazy to file haha.

 

@G.T. is yours / mine the original parts? How long does the torsion system typically last. What should I be looking for....

 

Yes it’s original. I pulled the silicone out of one section at a time and repacked it with new annually. Other than that, wax the zippers, nikwax and permethrin treat the tent fabric and I was done. I always made a point to never let the lid drop either open or closed to prevent unnecessary damage to it.

When you need a new torsion bar you will know as it will give up the ghost with a bang. Have only helped replace one on someone else’s unit down in Texas.

How many of you guys have awnings?? I’d like to pick up a 270 awning but I feel like it might not work well with the flippac. For those of you that do have awnings how the heck do you have them attached??

 

I’ve considered a CVT 55” awning with the added walls for the rear... haven’t pulled the trigger yet. I’d imagine I’ll be drilling a couple holes to mount it on the back between the glass & the lid.

 

Do you know where to purchase replacement tents?

 

No official source that I’m familiar with mate. A few have had some luck with sail shops.

 

I’m hoping to develop one next spring. Working on a couple sources.

 

Welp I’m sure you’ll share something when and if you’re able to figure something out but I’d be interested.

 

The tent itself is my only complaint with this unit.
I’d love to upgrade it so the SLO rain fly is unnecessary.

 

I'm sure more than a couple of people would be interested in this. Especially if the use of the rainfly becomes obsolete.
