Living in Maine we can have some long and cold winters. I've never had a remote starter in any vehicle, I always just run out and start it. Having my new (to me) Taco I'd like to start looking into getting a remote starter for this winter. What do you guys use? Also, are they difficult to install or would I be better off having someone install it for me? I wouldn't say I'm the handiest person so I'm definitely hesitant to self install. Do you think installing this could void any warranty on the vehicle if I do it myself?

Mine, it came free with the truck..... :D

Not sure if mine is one of the best (idat-astart), but it is a 2 way long range remote. I can start it inside the arena, when I'm playing pickup hockey, and come out to a warmed up baby! The 2 way tells me it was started.

I would have someone else install it.

I need, would like one as well.. however I work in a prison, and would have to start it up from My Post in Central control about 1000ft or so through 2 concrete walls, and a cacophony of radio signals/repeaters, and steel structure... 2 way would be preferable, or even a phone app start system...

Won’t void warranty. Just go to your local places that install and ask what options they have and decide based on the features you want

Or if you want to do some research first:

Keep in mind; most systems will turn off when the doors are opened, and you'll have to restart. It's a little annoying to me, but to some, it's a deal breaker. Actually, I find I just use it less, only when really hot or cold.

h key is still easy, you just have to tap into the tpms for some reason. You can do either install yourself it'll take about 30 mins to an hour depending on how you are with finding the right plugs and taking off the lower panel

OP get one from one of the guys @jmeitz or @N2DesignsInc on here in the for sale section they're both great, and will help you out a lot. Make sure to get the cell phone module so you can start and lock the car from anywhere.

my factory key fob wont even reach from the front of my building/parking lot let alone reach from inside it... thats even with a new battery. extended range is a requirement for me.

Yeah, my fob isn't the best. Definitely think I would need one that reaches a bit.

I have a Viper remote start. 2 way communication. Good range, but it works best when you have line of sight. It doesnt shut off when the doors open, only if you manipulate the pedals or gear shift without the key in. I have zero issues with it. Highly recommend. I had Best Buy do the install, they carry a lifetime warranty on work, so if it ever requires a rewire or, like I had, the brain switched out, they did the labor for free.

If you want a low cost, yet reliable remote start, go with N2DesignsInc. Same module I have, I have an H-Key and it's always worked reliably. Also, that wire tap is easy, they provide you with everything you need to do it.

If you want/need long-distance, they have their LR Remote add-on and/or Phone App. My truck is never further than my garage (under my bedroom) or in front of my office, so I couldn't justify the cost for either.

Edit: If you have push-start, regardless of the module/unit you buy, it will turn off when you open the door. Safety feature by Toyota and cannot be by-passed from what I have read.

Venders on here are great. Prettty affordable and they offer the phone start as well. It's all plug and play and takes 20-30minutes to install.
I just put one in my truck, with the cell start module for $390. Works great! You can start your truck from anywhere with service, lock and unlock the doors and see battery voltage.
