4.88's and stock (yes stock) tire size. According to the math I am over geared. Math is math but these double over drive transmissions make the setup perfect, and if I decide to I can run 33s. Best of both worlds. This setup and the 0944 Tune (87 performance for 4.88's) make you think you have a small block 4.7V8 under the hood. Simply no comparison to what the Mother ship put out.

i didn't realize that you have 30's. i also run 265/65-17, but E range, which absolutely gets this truck flying with OVT. and it can dance on road with 30's, not so much with bigger tires.

Instead of regear have you guys just tried S5 on the highway and S4 in the city. S5 at 70mph is about 2100 rpm, 2200 with converter unlocked. Much more responsive and isn't lugging. Same with S4 in the city. Not as convenient as drop it in D and go but saves cost of regear.

ETA: My tires are 265-70-17 Wildpeaks.

Maybe we can talk about the merits of re-gearing in say, a gearing thread, and keep this one for boost :notsure:

If anyone even dare consider 4.88s over 5.29s, you better have stock tires and plan on staying 100% stock. If your truck is an AT, and want to do anything like bigger tires, or weight go 5.29. Trust me. I’ve got 5.29s no weight, just 35s but light 35s and super light wheels and it still could use help in low end torque. Like a TT Kit :) but 5.29s solve the gear dance at higher speeds. I wouldn’t waste my time with 4.88s.

Wish OVtune would release a 5.29 specific tune instead of 4.88 as most people are going to be running 5.29s as time goes on.

I am working on a 5.29 tune, believe me.

The 5.29 tune requires some extra attention (and anyone getting 5.29s should be aware) with the 5.29s the truck is speed limited to around 90mph.

it's quite a bit of extra work

    He’s has a solid point
5.29 is what everyone I know is putting in their tacomas including myself.

And 90mph is a problem for me

    2.5" lift, 4.88 gears
I have 4.88 gears and 33” tires and it does fine. Its good up to 60mph anything higher and the engine revs too high in my opinion. I would only recommend 5.29 if you plan to use tires bigger than 33” or cruise at 50mph with stock tires.

    Fake news....

I would only recommend 4.88s with manual transmission for 33s. With AT, 5.29s. You need to be at higher rpms to be able to be slightly closer to the power band. You can’t follow your traditional “over/under geared” math with these AT Tacomas. They need to be able to cruise at higher rpms, at least until we figure out how to get more low end torque, which is why we are all in this thread! Haha

yep exactly. thats why the MT does better than the AT. Running down the interstate im cruising at 2500 RPM in the MT instead of 1800 RPM in the AT and get better fuel economy than my AT ever did, because its actually in the power band!

Whats too high "rev wise" are you turning 4k RPM at 60 mph?
