Is there a way to turn off the headlights when they are in the driving light mode?? I hate having them on when I am just parked for awhile..

    Thanks

    Welcome to TW!

Sounds like you have a 1st generation (up to 2004) Tacoma with Daytime Running Lights (DRLs). This means that your headlights will come on whtn the engine is running and the vehicle is not parked (Parking brake on or in "Park" on the automatic trannys). There is a wire that you can snip and disable the DRLs without causing damage to your vehicle or getting a MIL (malfunction indicator light).

Unfortunately I have a 2nd generation (2005 and up), and I do no know the wire. There are other members on here with 1st gens that might be able to help you, or you could do a search for "Disable DRL".

    Good luck!

That is how they should work. Once the DRL lights come on, they should not turn off until the key is turned off. They should not come on when you first start the vehicle, but rather once it is no longer in "Park" or when the parking brake is released.

    Hello

I needed to disable DRL on my 1998 when I installed Xenon headlight conversion.

I found that there is dropping resister beside front drivers side battery. Just unplug it and DRL is now turned off.

Hello stuckstucksnayota, I know this thread is super old but I was wondering if you ever figured out how to disable the drl on your 01? I've seen in another thread that there is a wire you can cut under the dash....did you find another way? Did you find the drop resistor by the battery that smilegeoff references in this thread? Thanks for any info. Trying to not cut wires as I will eventually be selling my 02 dc to accommodate my growing family.

The plug is only for the old models.

    From @Ace115
I cut the one in the pic with the red arrow.

From the other articles I read, Ishould have cut the one with the blue arrow. I’m going to try it tomorrow morning and see how itgoes.

Hey chrslefty, thanks for the reply. I can't find the thread with the wire cut pictures right now but I do remember it is supposed to be the white with green wire. In your pic that connection looks right but I would be sure that the wire is white that has faded to yellow, before you cut it. Maybe pull the harness wrap back a little and see if that wire has faded and is truly white with green stripe.

I would use the wire color as secondary information when doing this job. From all the research and photos I saw the wires color was not consistent through the different years of the 1st Gen. Instead just pay attention to the port on the plug. I did in fact cut the wire with the blue arrow from that photo. You’ll notice on the plug that it is the wire closest to the end of the plug and the wire socket is larger than all but one other wire socket(the one next to it). There was one post that had a very rough diagram of the plug, made in a program like MS Paint or something, that had the ports labeled and tagged correctly. If you stumble across that post I’d use that info to make your decision as to which wire to cut.

I cut the wire the other day. Hasta lueogo DRL. I cut the harness wrap back enough to expose enough wire so it could be spliced back together if needed.
