Hybrid engine

I would agree except adding electric motors I think would mean having to give up a M/T, so IDK.

 

Honda made Hybrid Vehicles with MT, Insight and CRZ if I'm not mistaken

 

Sort of... A train's diesel engine has no direct connection to the wheels at all. All that diesel does is turn a generator that generates electricity that powers the all electric drivetrain (think electric motors at each wheel).

 

That's a thought. An all EV setup would kill the MT. There are different type of hybrids. An electric motor that augments an existing drivetrain wouldn't necessarily kill the MT...

 

Keeping the MT and an internal combustion engine could potentially be a feature (for a while at least). What form will that take? Turbo? Hybrid? Hydrogen? EV versions simultaneously?

I echo the comments of some guys above that there isn’t one answer. Some areas are good for electrics (like the Salt Lake Valley) because the smog gets caught in between the mountain ridges and emissions are the biggest contributor. Rural areas like the Midwest where I’m from can’t really do electric as it stands now because many people drive tens of thousands of miles a year and when it gets down to -15, even the best batteries have sh*t mileage. Hydrogen can only work where there’s infrastructure.

It’s like everything else in life. Different strokes for different folks.

 

Think outside the ICE box: Who needs a transmission? Electric motors have a torque curve that is opposite of a gas engine - all the torque hits right off the line and there is only one moving part so revs aren't as limiting. This ads up to no need for a clutch or tranny as you are used to. Put a motor at each wheel or at each axle for four wheel drive. If there is a perfect technology for off road or rock crawling it's an EV. What did NASA send to the moon and Mars? No roads there.

 

Look at the difference in power output. I get the same mpg with my 2019 Tacoma with the 3.5 V6 auto with an output of 278hp as I did with my 95 Toyota pickup with 2.4 litre 4 cylinder 5 speed manual with an output of 116hp. And possibly lower emissions as well.

 

Yeah I was just comparing hybrids to an all gas vehicle.

Who has an old Tacoma with a manual tranny and a needs a new engine? Do this with it.

 

I've been spying on the Bollinger B1 for a couple years. Def don't have $70k or whatever they'll end up costing, but maybe at some point the resale on my Taco will allow me to swap for one even steven someday. Then I can trade all the rust and driveline problems for electrical problems. Welcome to the future.

At a announced starting price of $125k (not $70k) you and I or just about anyone on TW won't be swapping out our Tacos for a Bollinger, EVER.

 

Definitely it's not a good option for manual transmission!!

 

Seriously. It's practically double the tentative $70kish price initially given. I wonder what the chatter is like among the folks who put down the $1k months ago.

 

How about a diesel?

 

That's a ridiculous price for a truck. Trucks are tools. I get that you need to leap-frog price points to fund the innovation, but how about a totally-usable and affordable plug-in hybrid truck, one that can always use gas if it needs to?

I believe California is currently having rolling Blackouts because they cannot supply enough electricity.
