I really appreciate it. Deer is good too. From what I've gathered pretty much all game meat is going to be worth a try, elk is just what was discussed with my nutritionist. Unfortunately I'm not in a spot health wise where I can harvest it myself and that sucks.

I feel like I've seen venison at Raleys and Whole Foods...I'll have to pay more attention.

Literally just got home from the hunt a few hours ago. Harvested a nice healthy bull from Northern NV, I'll be processing it the next couple days. Single clean shot at 160 yards and he went down within a couple seconds, quartered immediately and meat has been well taken care of. I'm sure I can spare a few lbs, not excepting any money. Do you prefer ground or steaks? If ground Im assuming you want no fat added? The ground is great for things like home made sausage for pizza, meatballs, tacos burger etc, and steaks are great on bbq or in hot skillet with some montreal seasoning, or I also really like to make carne asada with them.

    Thanks!

100% agreed. Im super excited to get it processed, really miss having it in the freezer. I have heard moose is the one game meat that rivals it but I couldnt imagine anything better really.

It’s actually illegal to buy/sell wild game. The stuff hanging at blue ribbon and butcher boys are customers game. They pay them to hang them there to age and then butcher after. Trader Joe’s might have some farm animal meat though.

They can sell farm raised, can't sell wild game. Those pesky kids at the USDA get upset.

Congrats on the successful hunt @excorcist!

@Tbertrand, I sorta assumed that was the case (just like abalone I guess). Once it becomes an income source it is more likely to become the target of poachers. Certainly don't want to put anyone in a spot where they cross that line but I'm also very aware of what goes into a successful hunt and wouldn't ask for something for nothing from any of you.

Super excited to have gotten this guy! Next is Elk hunt!

Anyone recommend a butcher in Reno area? Or a place to have the skull boiled/beetled/euro mount?

If anyone has an experience with elk in the monitors wouldn’t mind a tip or two as well... considering a guide service to pack in/out. Can’t afford the 8000$ some want to do a full service trip with two guides but could afford a 1/4 of that.

If I can harvest an Elk, I’ll be happy to share some of that with you man. Meanwhile I don’t mind giving you a bit of this deer.

Nice! Not sure on shops, I always process my own. I should have been a butcher. Instead I type on a keyboard all day o_O

If you have the time definitely consider both butchering and doing the euro mount yourself. Its rewarding and you learn a ton.

My buddy got an elk done by "Beatle bailey" out on pyramid way. It was a couple hundred bucks and he was happy with it.

I just finished doing my elk. Pretty simple process of boiling to remove flesh, using peroxide to bleach skull, then just mounting to some stained pallet wood. Came out great.20191028_171833.jpg

You are not crossing the line! Usually asking for meat yields you a package or two! Just letting you know it’s illegal to purchase meat.
