Rodents won't build a nest if the hood is left propped open about 4-5" so light gets in or a night light under a closed hood should work. I have also heard that Irish Spring soap works.

I live out in the woods in the Shenandoah Valley in Northern Western Virginia (NOT WEST VIRGINIA - I'd have to marry my sister if I lived there)...we have lots of rodents, but I have a female Belgian Malinois who catches all things small and furry. Her favorite thing to do is to catch them and then drop them in her stainless water bowl...She sits and watches them swim around until they finally get tired and drowned. Once they stop moving she picks them up, lays them on the concrete floor and hits them with her paw to resuscitate them and the process starts over...Over the last 5 years she has killed hundreds of mice, rats and squirrels...I have zero problems with mice in the garage...FYI, my cats are worthless, they do not kill or chase anything...Cats are good for one thing...target practice...

Hmm... perhaps I should place the wife's Jack Russell in the garage for a few nights?

The mice ate the Irish Spring soap here at the house and the same with that guy that tested the dryer sheets and mothballs.

Mice love that soy based wiring according to the mechanics I was working with. I was working at a Ford dealership recently and saw several cars coming in with wiring harnesses chewed up by mice. They are partial to Fusions but I saw an Explorer chewed up as well.
We are over run with chipmunks and I have chased those buggers out of my air filter box and tail pipe.
We are looking at making a owl box to take care of the problem. Im sure they eat mice to. Nothing else has worked with them.

It sounds to me like your cats have done a good job training the dog to do their job for them.

While standing outside the other day I saw a chipmunk jump up in to the undercarriage. I walked over and banged around to get him out which didn't work. So I turned on the remote starter, that did the trick. He high tailed it out of there as soon as the engine came on.

Funniest home videos had a video a few years back of a chipmunk going into a guys tailpipe.
He started it up and that chipmunk blew out of there like a bullet. If it survived I doubt it ever thought of doing that again.

    Far from home...

In that case, Rodenticide (containing Bromethalin) might not be a good idea. Although it's very effective against any type of rodents.
Every winter, I store my '17 Shelby GT350..... and there were a few mice that were attempting to make a home under the hood. The treats containing Bromethalin, worked great.

However, a more quick and lethal approach is a trap that's designed for squirrels. It's designed so well, it will kill mice as well, even critters that you didn't know you had. (Just watch your fingers.... while setting it). Both of these solutions can be obtained from Amazon.

Over the years I have had a total of 4 of these dogs and all of them have had the same strange quirk of catching mice and torturing them and then reviving them for further entertainment...

I have chipmunks nest in my engine bays and have figured out how to keep them out. The pic below was what my wife's engine was getting overnight. Sprinkled cayenne pepper in the engine bay and stopped getting this instantly. I keep it fresh throughout the winter and have had no problems(WITH ONE CAVEAT)

Wife's wiring got chewed thru even after no rodents were nesting and with cayenne on the engine. I had the harness changed and started spraying the wiring with Fluid Film. No more damage or nesting since then. Strange thing is that we NEVER had chewed wiring until I started using the cayenne. It was almost a "F you! You won't let us nest so we gonna F you up!"

TLDR: Cayenne in the engine bay, Fluid Film on the wiring keeps them away.

If you sprayed Fluid Film on the wires, then maybe that is what caused the chewed wires, in spite of the presence of cayenne in the rest of the engine bay.

The engine only had cayenne on it when the wires got chewed. The FF was sprayed on after the wiring was replaced. No more activity in the engine bay with FF and cayenne.

    ETA: Cayenne stopped the nesting
    FF stopped the chewing

I wonder if Toyota can be found at fault for using soy based products... Isn't it common sense that rats or other rodents would mess it and possibly eat it?

I don't believe our 3rd Gen Tacoma's have any soy based products.

IMG_1306.jpg The main wiring harness is covered in Soy Bean. My Toyota mechanic says the Soy Bean attracts vermin. They ate the shit of my main harness on my 2016 Tacoma limited. Insurance ended up paying 11,500 bucks for changing everything including shorting out of the main computer. I did not know what happened because my truck would not start. I don't drive it every day. I opened the hood and I swear to god, there was a squirrel on top of my engine saying, yoooo, what's up. This happened in the winter time earlier this year that I took a swing at the bastard with a broom I was trying to get the snow off. As you guys can see, they had a field day. What my mechanic ended up doing is covering up the new harness that is covered with pepper which they do not like made by Honda. I also put a Viper electric start from my phone which I start every day.IMG_1305.jpg
