Anyway, no more derailing the thread, I’ve stated my piece.

OP, make sure you test drive both and that you truly appreciate what you pick. Don’t buy something you don’t like.

Just a thought about the Sport: With a bunch of weight, if you go with the sport you will likely wanna regear to 5:29s, at that point you can install the air lockers.

Edit: oops, I was thinking of an AT.

5.29s on the MT or AT? 5.29s on the AT is slightly lower gearing than the stock 4.30 on the MT.

But yeah, getting a locker on a Sport isn't the worst proposition. Even the OEM e-locker mod has been sorted out.

I was thinking the same thing, 5.29 would probably be a bit steep for MT.

Yeah. We were shooting that one around a couple days ago.

The MT gearing really works for me on the highway between 60 and 70. Not buzzy or lugging.

Aggressive?!?! lol Seriously?! Why is it so hard for people on the internet to believe anything!? Yes I knew. I have a buddy that works at Toyota in San Antonio. He said it's the number one complaint about Tacomas hands down!! Sounds legit right?! I also knew about the OV Tune to fix it. Think what you want man. It's a known issue and fact that thousands (NOT a Handful on Tacoma World) of people have had and that's the reason for the existence of OV Tune at all?!?! no?!? Regardless of your personal opinion and experience. I'm not against you man and I'm glad you are so happy and such a well informed human being on everything you have done in your life. I'm glad everything you buy is top of the line and there is never something of substandard quality. But...most of us have moderate opinions and can be honest about our short-comings in life. Your tone was a typical condescending forum comment how everyone that dislikes something about their Tacoma is a misinformed idiot. 'Merica

you'll want that trailer under 4000 pounds loaded. and i'd go double cab long bed. those short beds are tiny. the access cab is tiny and i think dog will be happier with a double cab.. best bet is to go look and drive one.. get your seats exactly where you want them and check what the room is like in the back.

towed a 3750 pound (empty) with a 2017 tacoma offroad double cab long bed. while it never felt unsafe and made it up any hills i needed it to the thing was at 4000-4500 rpm way too much for my liking. and with the small payload/tongue weigh capacity it dropped ass pretty easily which isn't so good for towing..

picture is with everything empty when we first got the trailer.. loaded the trailer and a couple things int he truck and the ass dropped..

if you decide to do a travel trailer then make sure its light and you use a real good weight distribution hitch with anti sway built into it..

On my 2nd Access Cab and would buy another if I needed to replace it. And would go OR again.

Both have passed Lab tests. Deployed the Dewalt tool boxes, padding above, then a dog "hammock". Plenty of room for a 60 pounder to turn around and stretch. She cannot wait to get back there.

Long bed with cap swallows long mtn. bikes and 186cm skis in the same load. For quick camping trips, can sleep back there all stretched out. 5' bed is not for us, neither is a DC long bed.

As for OR vs Sport, my test drives indicated Sport handles better on smooth surfaces. Was not sure about the softer OR suspension at first but love it now. Gotta go a bit slower cornering on pavement and there is some brake dive but driving on rough surfaces and washboard dirt roads it is a much smoother ride than Sport.

OR AC in US dictated Automatic transmission only as you have found. Use S mode to limit upshits and ECT always on. Manual intervention as needed but zero left leg work. Love a manual but do not regret going with this Auto. In my opinion many of the complaints about the Automatic are related to putting it in D (not S mode or ECT) and having sports car like expectations.

Really the only negative for me for dogs in an Access Cab are the lack of operable rear side windows (1st gen rear sides did pop open), and a powered rear window would be nice but not necessary as it is reachable from front seats.

my son has a sport and i had an offroad.. you are right. the sport is a lot more firm (almost harsh to me) and takes corners a lot better staying flat in the turns.. my offroad was a lot smoother ride but had a lot more body lean in corners.

For me, very much yes! For my fam, like I said, a 4,500lb 19ft'er is probably the lightest / smallest that would get by.

Hell, anything that would get me out of dealing with wet tents would be great. I'm easy.

I'm confused. I've been lurking in these forums for a few weeks now and to me, at least, seems like most people have not had many issues with their 2020 and 2019 Tacos.

The years before those seem like the whole transmission shifting at highway speeds was a huge issue and also the BSM.

IDC about the BSM, but if I do pull the trigger on a 2020, I'd like a good shifting AT, which doesn't seem to be an issue anymore.

Can anyone chime in on this?

Ha! Same here. 2 years ago we went out for backpacking in May. Of course, some freezing rain came thru and temps dropped to 20F and our sleeping bags then could only do 40F... welp, we almost froze that night with the wetness of the tent and the ground

That's nice and looks very roomy... and under 4000 lbs? That's light for what it looks like!

For 2019 and 2020, Toyota reps mentioned that the transmission software was improved. That said, after reviewing data dumps, OVT posted that nothing was changed since the TSBs were dropped back in 2018. It is hard to say? Like you have seen though, shifting threads have tapered off quite a bit. Not completely gone though.

Oh yeah. All that plus getting them dried out at home for storage. The fam is not impressed with my tents set up in the living room for a couple days and the flies hanging in the garage between the cars. Ha!

i've also been curious, and it's hard to get the picture around here. maybe create a new thread with a poll for 2020 ATs and their shifting? maybe 2019's as well?

I can tell you this (as objectively as possible)...

I have a 17 Off Road 4x4 DCSB auto. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the transmission. Didn’t have any issues with it when it was stock and don’t have issues with it now that it’s lifted and on 34” MTs.

I just test drove a 2019 voodoo blue TRD Pro and the transmission felt identical. Felt no different.

The “issues” you see reported for the automatic are based on people’s subjective opinion on how it feels to them.

Go test drive one and decide for yourself. You will either like it, or you won’t. If you don’t, then don’t buy it! Lol.

    414C2FC3-60D8-4DAC-9545-CDD0DBB76A06.jpg

Unfortunately, I can’t comment on the BSM. I don’t have it and have not had any experience with it.

I believe OV Tuning looked at the AT transmission tuning between the 2019 and the 2020 and it was no different.

Also, Toyota has released some updated tuning for the Tacos, in order to further satisfy some of the complaining consumers.
