I need to put some new shocks on my 01 Prerunner and can pick up a set of Bilstein 48510-04190 from a 2017 TRD for next to nothing. I love the price, but will the shock fit?

They won't, 3rd gen suspension is only bolt-on compatible between 2nd/3rd gens but not 1st gens

As Ryan mentioned, they will not fit on a 1st gen. They are way too long.

OP, you didn't mention which truck you have but one must assume that since you posted this in the 1st gen section, you have a 95.5-04 6 lug Tacoma.

edit: just saw it is an '01.

Why would you want to put on a set of shocks designed for a completely different truck that weighs a lot more than your truck, has different suspension geometry, etc...? I mean, even if they did technically fit, it's likely going to ride like crap.

What do you mean "next to nothing"? A pair of 5100s cost like <$170 brand new, and are designed specifically for your truck.

Plus, if those are factory take-offs, the aftermarket bilstiens will be BETTER shocks anyway. They are not the same shock.

Just get ones designed for your application.

There are *some* applications where a part from a different truck will not only fit our first gens, but also have a specific benefit. The only off the top of my head is the Tundra brake upgrade. It's a bolt on upgrade, and provides better braking power because it's designed for a heavier truck. However, with suspension items, IMO it's a terrible idea to try and fit Tundra (or even newer Tacoma components) to a 1st gen. Suspension is tuned for the weight, so getting something made for a heavier truck is useless unless you've made your truck so heavy that you need that extra support, but at the same time, if your truck is that heavy, you've likely exceeded the GVWR anyway...
