I can’t really help. But I’m looking to to do the same thing to a 2nd gen 2.7l DCSB.

I haven't done it on a tacoma before but I have done it on obd1 toyota no problem with no check engine light.
For obd2, I am not sure if it sets off the CEL but everything should work. sometimes non emissions related codes will be stored but not actually light up the light.
I do think the O/D light will blink at you when you have a transmission problem.. which you can simply remove if you have swapped it out.
worst case scenario if it does set off the CEL for some odd reason and you want it off, then swap the manual ecu. I am mostly getting at you do not need it to get it to run.

I am going to be manual swapping mine here pretty soon, so I can update it because I do not have a manual ecu but I have all the other parts, I don't think I will need it.
And the tacoma is not that sophisticated electronically at all, in 2001+ half the lexus models had immobilizers and started running the dash off Canbus which makes everything harder.

I’m doing my ext cab soon. I got most everything I need from a member here but I’ll need a few more things like a new shifter for the t case and front and rear driveshafts. As for the auto ecu you should be able to trick it into keeping the cel off. I’ll start a build when I start with the swap. Search around tw for swaps, there are quite a few here for info.

On a different note, what kind of money would we be talking about for extending the rear pilot shaft and shortening the front? Trying to keep the budget down. I can get a rear spacer and cut and weld the front but I’d rather have it done by a professional. Other option is getting the correct Toyota shafts and bolt on

It will turn on the check engine light because it's missing a speed sensor for the internal drum of the trans. Beings he's in SoCal the check engine light functioning properly is a must.

Sounds like a business opportunity for me to build a "dummy" sensor to trick the Auto ECU with the signal it wants so that people can swap easier... including myself in the future.

According to the FSM, SP1 (output of the combination meter to ECU) is just a Pulse generation with vehicle moving. I don't see why this can't be tricked with something from Dakota Digital or something else.

The vehicle speed sensor detects the vehicle speed and inputs a control signal to TERMINAL SP1 of the engine control
    module via the combination meter.

That's not what throws a CEL with a manual swap. The shift solenoids or lack there of do. Which can be fixed with some resistors to make it seem like they are still there.

Yes tmff sounds like he is is familiar with Toyota swaps. It's the solenoids which can be left connected or tricked. Still, they are trans codes and might not trip the cel for obd2 unless that is a California thing.

Isn't the speed sensor on the transfer case?
Manual ecu cars have the same signals including speed which is pretty basic.

It throws CEL minutes after startup, every time. I swapped a '02 Dcab 3.4 with auto computer in my dads 3vz 5 speed '91. I didn't mess with trying to keep the CEL off or even the rear O2 in that truck since it resides in a non emissions county.

Prolly the rear o2 code setting the light off after it doesn't register (when warm) and your seeing the stored trans code. It might not light up for just the trans code.

The rear O2 is a 2 trip monitor, the trans codes are there even on the first start up.

Unplug your trans harness and start the truck, LMK how fast that CEL pops up.

Good idea, will give that a try sometime but sounds like you have experience with it. Would try a workaround then or replace ecu if it matters. I'll be swapping mine soon so will find out anyways.

I had a diagram on what wires to wire together with resistors, I will have to find it. IMO go to Jim's or Yota yard and get a 01 manual trans ecu, should be a direct swap in.

I cab swapped my truck and kept the 01 manual ecu in a 02 D-cab.

Tell me what are you going to do with this second speed sensor on the automatic
    trans?

Here's the normal one for the speedometer.

Here the manual talks about both of them.

Nothing, that's a shaft speed sensor for the trans to operate and shift properly. AFAIK it has nothing to do with the VSS that is on the Tcase that is what the speedo uses. I haven't seen or researched how that can cause a CEL.

    manual swap in progress
So I just manual swapped my taco last weekend and I got a CEL a little while after running with 3 codes for the 3 solenoids.
Also the light for the a/t oil temp was on.
I looked up the resistance for all of them, solenoids 1-2 were around 15homs, the third one around 5.6 ohms.
The a/t oil temp resistance was 1kohm in the manual.

So I decided that 15 ohm resistors would draw like .8 amps and need to be like 10 watts etc.. the ones with heatsinks for 12v.
But the 1kohm resistor wouldn't pull many amps and could use a small 1/4 or 1/2 watt resistor.
I figured I would give it a shot as maybe it is just looking for an open or short and doesn't care about the actual resistance there.

So I stuck 1kohm reistors in the 3 solenoids (which are on the same 3 pin plug) and the other side wired to a ground wire that I ran to a nearby bolt. For the oil temp sensor connector, I stuck the 1kohm resistor in the 2 pins.

I cleared the codes and drove around all day and none of the lights have come back on.
I used a torque pro obd2 scanner and there were no codes pending.
I will keep an eye on it to make sure they don't get too hot but seems to be working fine so far.
