Pretty much. If it’s in the calculator then that’s that. I’ve also considered a beater car for Atlanta so that when some idiot inevitably scratches it up or something it’s whatever, but the high taxes made me reconsider.

Well, I found the issue. I was not using the VIN in the calculator, just year/make/model etc. Not inputting a VIN looks like it pulls the value of it when new without depreciation no matter what you paid for it.

I pulled a random vin off autotrader and used that in the calculator. No VIN with everything else the same still provides a TAVT of over $1200, but with the VIN, its $50 or $120 which is slightly more reasonable haha.

Huh, interesting. I remember when I used it to calculate for a Civic I almost bought off a buddy, it was finicky without the VIN. I think there’s some extra fields somewhere you have to fill in to get it to calculate right. From what I remember, it showed me $200 or so without the VIN on that Civic which was a third of what I’d have paid.

It asks for what you paid on the calculator, but I didnt change that so not sure if it factors it in, vin made all the difference other than new/existing resident which gives 3%/7% tax of the value that it self populates.

So you could look into that beater again, just use a vin.

It doesn't matter what you pay, they go on fair market value of the vehicle. I bought my taco used from a friend 2 years ago and paid a few thousand less than fair market, but paid tax based on the higher number. I also found out that if you were registered in GA, then register somewhere else, then decide to go back to GA for some wacko reason... They will make you pay it all over again. So they get your money twice. So dumb. I called asking that when I decided to register in AK. So for sure I ain't going back south LOL

Yep, I go thru some vehicles and have had to deal with this a lot.
You can haggle with them, by bringing a signed bill of sale, but don’t think that’s gonna seal the deal.
I roll down to the DMV and it’s full of southern ladies behind the desk.
You need to first come off like you really like their Hair (must be believable). Also, if you somehow bring up the topic of going to the Jamaica and that they should come along...this is part two, important step (as you now have gotten them thinking outside of the DMV).
Lastly, you say your rolling up to Wyatts BBQ, and if they wants some brisket you pick it up.
Yes yes, all of this is flirting! This is the south, and being sweet will get you far.

    just sayin

Had to pay TAVT on my Tacoma when we moved. Total bullshit. I have essentially paid sales tax on my truck twice now...and in 2 different states. If there is a petition to get that nonsense revoked, my name will be on it.

Agreed. When I moved to GA it was the same deal. Like why should I pay taxes on something I’ve owned for 15 years???

I'm used to a 3-7% fee...it was just the 50% that the calculator was saying that I did not approve of.

I think that's why they have the new thing implemented that makes it only 3% for stuff that's transferred, to factor in you already paying taxes elsewhere. To make it a little less painful.

I feel you. Taxes are always a sore spot for me no matter what percentage. Haha. Get taxed for making money, get taxed for spending money, get taxed for holding money, etc etc. But that’s the world we’re in, so just keep playing the game. Hahaha. :deadhorse:
