Toyota claims manual transmission sales for Tacoma's is 5% of total sales. I am curious what the manual to auto precentage is of this forum. Think the percentage would be a lot higher because more manual owners are enthusiastic about their trucks vs. the average auto owners that have never heard of TW or even the word enthusiast. Their truck is just a truck, generic and A to B transportation.

This is the first answer that actually provided any information. Thank you!

I can see how the manual transmission might provide a perceived advantage over an auto. As far as actual capability, I still doubt it.

I could argue that I have more control because I could use one foot for the gas, and one for brake, as I'm not dicking around with a clutch pedal. I also think that the torque converter allows me better control of the truck on steep inclines and obstacles, where a MT driver would have to ride the clutch to get the same effect.

I have a AT and it is what it is. I read all about the AT before I bought it and I love my truck with AT.

I have 4x4ed in both manual and auto. They both have advantages. The manual you can completely disengage the driveline with the push of the clutch pedal. This is great for times when you have to roll back a bit to readjust your line. In the auto you have to apply the brake, shift the selector into reverse or neutral to do the same. Gear ratios help more for manuals where torque converter slip provide added gear ratio through slippage.

    Edited for clarity and grammar.

I've driven plenty of both in a bunch of different vehicles, the difference is real. There are distinct advantages in being able to tell the transmission exactly what to do, being able to disconnect the engine and transmission at will, and being able to take advantage of my knowledge of the upcoming road and pick a gear predictively - and be able to do it all very quickly and intuitively. My moms car has the whole paddle shifting thing with the auto and its a very clunky substitute for a real MT, I think I only ever use it for engine braking on long downhills.

That said, I agree that certain offroad situations are easier with an AT, climbing obstacles or yanking people out especially. A lot of that can be mitigated with lower gearing on an MT though, like a tcase doubler.

I used to be all about the MT also when I was young. For driving enjoyment, especially in a sports car, I still like a manual.

As far as selecting a gear, I can do this with sport mode.

These aren't sports cars and I can't imagine ever needing to change gears in a hurry.

Personal preference aside, I still think AT is better for off-roading. At least, the newer AT's are. I haven't heard anything here to change my mind.

It's also funny that this thread was started to make fun of MT fanboys, and so many guys have played right into it.

^That wasn't aimed at the post I quoted, as that post actually had a valid argument.

People ask questions, I like to attempt to provide answers and a little bit of perspective. I don't give a shit if they think I'm a fanboy, but i do laugh when they insinuate that I just drive an MT to feel more like man. Its really that I'm a control freak and asking a computer to do what I want with a clunky interface is annoying ;)

    No.

Tacoma MT people are more akin to the vegan
/gluten free/CBD deebags. They have to tell everyone all the time and make big scenes everyhere.

Nobody cares about your dietary or transmission issues.

I would think of a fanboy as someone who would say that something is better without having anything to support it. Or, like you mentioned, the guys who think they are manly because they drive stick. You provided some insight as to why you prefer the manual. So, I wouldn't consider you a fanboy.

    2002 3.4L auto -love it
    2001 3.4L MT love it
    2016 auto -love it.

in traffic, I like the auto. When driving for fun, I like the MT. With supercharger, less compilations with MT.
In summary, it’s nice to have them all.
