I’m not for or against it lol. I was just speculating to answer your question. Sure people lift with improper form, but that’s because they don’t have or never had any real training. Crossfitters (probably) have a trainer whether it’s a group or individual and they’re actively teaching improper form that leads to injury. Again, I’m not for or against crossfit, just my best guess

I think your guess may be right.

I think these folks look like incredible athletes.
Like go pick up a fucking Rogue weight rack, walk down a track 50 feet then snatch twice your body weight 30 times.

Plus I like how anti PED they are. Not that I’m knocking PED athletes. Its a free country make your isn personal choices, I just respect the natural competitions that strive to maintain that reputation.

Back when I first started powerlifting alot of guys wouldn't do DL's every week, only every 10 days to 2 weeks. And some wouldn't deadlift much if at all till a competition was getting close. They said your back gets a decent amount of work with squats and regular deadlifts could actually overwork it. My back is a tricky mess and I have struggled with deads since I started and have quit them several times because I always seem to wind up with a strained or seized muscle. But I do all the other stuff and it doesn't usually take too long to get the numbers up once you start back into them so personally I wouldn't worry about it. You could consider doing other stuff like stiff leg deads or rack pulls and T bar rows. I've been doing rack pulls from just below the knee with just a very slight flex in the knee. Not going real heavy but enough to keep reps at 6-8, or 10-12 if I want to do them as a "cardio alternative" :).

    Thats nice to hear!

Ideally I want to do everything again eventually but right now I need to modify. I just don’t want to set myself up for muscle imbalances.
Sounds like I’m OK to leave out deads.

Yeah, I really don't see you having any issue. Plenty of other ways to blast the back! And as most of us in this weight game know-modifications/work arounds are always necessary at some point because of injury, time, schedule etc. Find another way and keep rolling!

I am mainly anti-crossfit because anyone who does it wants it to be known by everyone that they crossfit…

Also its expensive as hell. I lift at a crossfit gym occasionally and the crossfitters pay $189 a month for their classes...

Also its not a sport its a brand. So crossfit gyms have to pay extra money in licensing fees to say they have crossfit… Plus anything branded with "crossfit" on it is like an instant 50% markup.

Also, 97.6% of crosfitters I know think that because they pay so much for their "fitness" that they are better than everyone else. When really a lot just pay for the gym then never show up. yet they still wear the crossfit clothes and have the stickers on their car. Crosffitters are insanely stubborn and wont take advice from anyone but a CF level 1-2 coach, aka 19 year olds who spend a couple hundred bucks to take a class for two days then become "trainers".

Also, crossfit doesn't make you good or better at anything particular, it just makes you better at crossfit and a mediocre powerlifter/oly lifter/gymnast… So you will never be the strongest, or the best lifter, or the fastest. You'll just be good at crossfit workouts.

Also, crossfit certification classes don't teach proper techniques for Olympic lifts. They teach the crossfit way which cuts a lot of corners and doesn't give you a solid base to learn from. They teach certain cues like "jump up when doing the clean" when the real cue is to "jump drop under the bar". I see it everyday. Crossfitters trying to do cleans and snatches and they physically jump up off the ground like 2 feet as the weight comes up and then slam back down super loud on their feet. It's hilarious.

There are a handful of crossfit gyms I have seen that have actual Olympic training and the coaches only have their crosssfit certification so they can say they are "crossfit based", which in turn means more people sign up and they can charge more... But still, they don't teach crossfit, they teach actual oly lifts followed by some random ass crossfit workout. Most standard crossfit gyms are ran by people with no background outside of crossfit and they are blinded to think that the crossfit way is the best.

For example: I had a CF Level 2 guy watch me deadlift at a crossfit gym. He came over and told me everything I was doing wrong because it wasn't "crossfit style". So I watched him struggle to hitch up a 315lbs deadlift and laughed my ass off. He said "well you may be able to deadlift more than me but I bet I can do (insert specific crossfit workout name here) faster than you!" Actual functional lifts don't really matter. Its all about who is better at what crossfit workout.

So my assumptions were correct haha.

LOL at the guy saying your lifts were wrong though. I'm sure that would have been a hilarious sight to see.

Yes I see that. Its very much a cult following I think.

If I do decide to go to a gym I will be on the lookout for a good environment with good trainers/coaches. Proper form is my #1 so I’m not wanting to learn to do everything wrong.

I also thought the price was based on how often you go. Like you can buy memberships that only allow 1 day per week that are cheaper.

I disagree a bit on functional strength. I feel what they do is more applicable to the real world compared to powerlifting.
But thats all dependent on goals and what you want to do and your viewpoint.

If by functional you mean doing burpees in a weighted vest lol

I bash them but there are some good movements and workouts. Nothing you can't do on your own though.

Price depends on the particular places. Here they are all $150-200 a month.

By functional I mean translatable to the real world like hunting and carrying a 100lb pack 10 miles.
    Or running an ultra.
    Or climbing a mountain.
    Etc.

Hello All, I recently found this thread on the main page and have been a subbed lurker ever since. I already downloaded stronglifts 5x5 and am going to start today at a baseline. Not ready to post pics or progress but it will be a start. You guys sure are motivating in here.

Small background on me: I have recently noticed some weight loss over the past 18 months or so, not due to a concerted effort so much as a lot of little changes (cutting out soda, more fruits and veggies, less meals from a sack, I shed a sedentary job that I had for a few years, better portion control, etc.). I bought the Pocket Monkii on kickstarter and really enjoy doing monkii workouts with the app. Also I recently trained for and completed a half marathon and I would like to keep riding my wave of momentum so i am here.

I have the original garmin vivoactive (without the HR function, I wear a chest strap when I want the HR functionality). I have always had garmin fitness products and I really like them. This one is fully waterproof and I think I have worn it just about everyday for over the past 2 years or so with no issues. It does what I need: tracks my runs effectively & shows text messages, calls, and phone notifications. It is not the fanciest or the most pretty, but I have worn it water skiing, river rafting, and every day in the shower and it hasnt died. Also the battery lasts like 2-ish weeks (or more) when I am not running more than 15 miles per week. So thats great. I dont work for garmin I have just been really happy with their fitness tracking products, YMMV.

Price in my area is about the same. But the bolded part is so true. There are so many WODs online if you follow gyms you can often see their WODs and just take it to your gym for less and do it. most gyms have what you need to do most WODs. So why pay the huge fee when you can DIY?

    Yes! A woman joins us!

I am taking a look at the Garmin Fenix and the Coros Vertix.
I’m wanting battery life, HR, VO2 max, altitude, topo maps, and extended GPS battery life.
The phone stuff I couldn’t give a shit. My workout time is my me time. The world can fuck off lol

I previously had a Garmin Forerunner and liked it a lot. Many people rave about their products. I’m leaning towards Garmin but the Coros just looks bad ass.

You thinking of going full crazy and doing a full or are you happy with the half?
