NEW TSB, Whine Noise From Rear of Vehicle

My whine went away when it got cooler and i turned the A/C off! Now I still hear it when the A/C cycles.

 

If the trd offroad an trd pro have a different differential than the other trims, but all trims have experienced this issue, how can the problem be the differential?

Maybe start looking at the driveshaft?

 

So I just bought a 2019 that had 2600 miles on it Tacoma TRD sport four-wheel-drive and on the way home driving down the interstate approximately 55-65 miles an hour I hear a whining noise coming from the rear end. I didn’t hear this whenever I test drove the vehicle I only drove it up to about 40 to 45 mph it was barely audible sounded almost like tire noise or when you drive over the yellow or white lines. From everything I’m seeing on here it sounds like I may have just bought one with a bad rear end if. Can anybody give me advice on this or how to go about getting my dealer to fix ? Any help would be very much appreciated. Is it safe to drive with this noise.?

 

It's not a bad diff, just how they are designed/built. They all do it.

Don't bother trying to get a dealer to fix it because Toyota has no official solution for it. Just learn to accept the noise and enjoy the rest of the truck.

Is there a risk of damage to the vehicle or causing a wreck? My first Tacoma. I drive for home health so I’ll be on the road a lot. I’m supposed to go into the dealer Friday for them to look it over.

 

What about when you come to a stop from like 20-15 mph does the truck kinda vibrate or hesitate slightly ?

 

It's not a safety issue, it's an NVH issue. There have been no known cases linking the noise to diff failure, and I have done a bunch of research on here on this issue.

You are certainly free to have Toyota check it out but I predict that visit will go 1 of 2 ways: 1) They will tell you the noise is "normal/characteristic" of the vehicle and send you on your way, or 2) They will tell you that they hear the noise and will offer to replace the diff, only to have the noise come back a few hundred or thousand miles later. Either way, you will end up where you are now.

 

Yep. That is also a well known quirk with these trucks.

Mine occurs mostly from 25 to 20 mph on deceleration.

I’d generally agree with @ryan760, but would add that you need to get it checked. I had ground gears, excessive shavings, and the pinion angle was off on mine. They replaced it and like many others, the noise eventually came back, but mine came back at multiple speeds and it drove me crazy to the point that I sold my truck, and I’ve driven Tacos for a long time.

My truck had a lot of other issues that contributed to me getting rid of it, so the howling wasn’t the only reason. I think many of these diffs are not set up right and was told mine wasn’t, but that also doesn’t mean it’ll grenade on you, it may just get a little noisy. I think you have to do what is best for you. If it bothers you, get it looked at and fixed but don’t get your hopes up. If it only irritates you a little then it’s nothing a more aggressive set of tires won’t fix. . Best of luck.

 

2100 miles on mine. I've learned to accept the truck's quirks and enjoy it. I did a whole bunch of research on these issues early on, but all of that research pointed to: It's just how these trucks are, nothing to worry about.

 

Curious does anybody the so get the howl/ whine sound around 30-35 and 50-60 mph lightly on gas as well as off gas?

 

OK - thank you very much to all of you as I thought I was going crazy with what that sound could be. Just purchased my Tacoma used from a Toyota dealer, so I am hoping they will be able to assist in some way as I am outside the 36 mos / 36K miles...

I drove to another state to purchase my Tacoma because I specifically wanted a DCSB Off Road with a manual transmission.

 

I've been dealing with a pretty annoying howl for over a year now on my 2020 AC taco. it started after getting a lift and 4.88 regear. the gears got louder and the shop ended up replacing them under warranty. for the most part the new gears are quiet but right at 70 MPH and up to about 78 the harmonic howl is incredibly loud. it also seems to change depending on where you are in the cab as well. of course it's loudest right in the driver seat...
this is only on acceleration and slightly changes with how much gas i give it.

Finding this thread has given me hope. while i have an access cab i am not part of the TSB but from my research the body mounts are the same. i just ordered 2 dynamic dampeners and 2 pads.
really hoping these will solve this issue. if not, i will most definitely be selling the truck as this issue has been an on going nightmare.

I will report back. I'm curious if anyone else has tried this with an access cab?

 

DC OR here. Put those dampeners on a few years ago and forgot that problem existed. Out of everything I tried that by far worked the best to the point I don’t notice it at all.

Hope it works the same for you. I wouldn’t have the truck anymore if I couldn’t get rid of that noise.

Just installed tonight and went for a drive. it nearly eliminated the noise in the 60 MPH range but the loud one at 70 is still pretty loud unfortunately... it did help a little but it's still very noticeable. i think i'll try a heavier oil and see if that makes any difference. if not i may be looking at the new ranger raptor.

 

I bought a brand new 2017 when they came out. Took a while to drive it with music off etc. but ours had the same howl noise from the rear end between 55-65mph as well. It was the worst when coasting down a long not very steep hill where you were just barely on the gas at 60mph to keep speed. We lifted the truck before it was a year old with maybe 10K miles on it. Noise completely went away. Drove it to 60K miles lifted with no issue/noise.

When we went to sell it I put it back to stock and traded it into the dealer. At stock height the noise was immediately back. I think the noise has to do with the drive line angle at the diff. Thats just my experience. Not sure about others as the truck is long gone.
