There are no "straight gears" (?) in any Tacoma. I have an auto, if that helps...... But the stick is even geared worse, higher rpms in top gear than the auto, so the point is moot, whatever it was.......

Apple to oranges...... My old mans new F150 with 4.6 and 6 speed 2wd, gets 20% better highway mileage than my Taco at the same speed. I'm sure 1650 rpm at 70 mph helps. Interestingly, it has the exact same mileage rating, with 700 extra lbs, and 60 hp more. Thing is on the highway, 2 way average, he gets way better mileage, in the city, mine is slightly better.

When the Tacoma had 400 miles on it, I took a road trip Chicago to Dallas, and averaged 21 - 22 mpg. I was impressed.
Around town it gets 17 - 18 mpg.
With the Chicago winter around the corner, I'm guessing I'll be seeing 15 - 16 mpg.
If you're looking for good mileage, this is not the vehicle to buy, go for a Corolla.
I had a Ranger 4 cyl, 5 spd manual, 2 wd for years and the city mileage wasn't much better than the Tacoma, and the highway mileage was worse. That 4 cyl (112 HP) Ranger strained on the highway, while the 4.0 liter, 236 HP Taco takes 75 MPH in stride.

I just drove 1600 Km round trip yesterday with the bed full [about 600 lbs] and an open trailer with a lawn tractor, two rototillers and an air compressor on board. I think I averaged about 15-16 mpg. But I did just that, filled it when she was thirsty.

I bought a truck cause I needed a truck, not because I wanted a 4 wheel drive civic.

^You have M/T Tires at 10 psi? You are towing alot in the city? 10.7 mpg with a stock truck means you are getting 160 miles between fill ups.

Either the math is wrong or your truck hates you.

No i am not running M/T tires. I also do not tow in the city or at all. i drove 163 miles and filled up 15 gal. weird. i drove to maryland today for work on a FULL tank of gas. i got 110 Miles and it is just below the 3/4 mark. i still think that is bad.

Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
Are you resetting your odometer when you fill up? That's pretty bad, is your math wrong, I am getting about 260 at 3/4 tank.

I drive about 90 miles a day pretty much all highway. I do periodically keep track of my mileage. When my 4 cylinder 05 access cab 4x4 was bone stock I got 23-24mpg. I swapped out the tires to heavier and more aggressive 265/70/16 General grabber AT2's and mileage dropped to 21. Adding a drop in AFE filter got it up to 21.5-22. Now my 05 double cab 4x4 4.0/auto TRD bone stock can't seem to quite get 20. But it seems most don't do better than 19.5 or so which is what i'm getting. I might do a full AFE intake/throttle body spacer on this one to see if it helps. I would love to see 21-22 out of it but I think it's a bit of a pipe dream. The extra power and room are worth the MPG loss though. It's kind of strange that my 4 barrel carb equipped 85 mustang is now the most fuel efficient vehicle I own. Could be way worse though my FJ40 gets 12MPG.
