Manual Transmission Oil

Hello,
I'm replacing the clutch on my 99' during Thanksgiving, and I was planning on draining the transmission oil and putting in new transmission oil. I plan on using Red Line MT90. I checked the service manual and it states that the 5 speed R150 transmission only takes 2.7 quarts. Is this true? So, if I drain the trans oil, about 2.7 quarts should come out, and I should put 2.7 quarts in? I'm only asking because the amount seems low to me. I figured that it would take more trans oil like around 5 or 6 quarts. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

 

The amount you state is correct. The manual transmissions don't use all that much oil. Make sure you can open the fill plug before you open the drain plug to drain the fluid

 

Auto transmissions take several quarts of fluid, manual transmissions only take a few quarts of gear oil per change. Fill it up until the oil starts to run out of the fill hole, that's when you know it's full

Thank you! I'll be sure to do that! I'm going to fill up the transmission through the shifter hole because it seems easier than using a pump.

 

Pump is super easy...I just picked up a cheap $5 one from the parts store. Just have to remove the fill plug and pump the oil in. Although you can do it via the shifter hole too...I think you have to remove a bunch of stuff there though to get to it. I've never done it that way myself.

 

This isn't a bad idea. Knowing how I am, I'd prolly check the fill hole just to make sure the fluid is up that point, as that is the measure point for knowing it's full.(though it should be due to dumping 2.7 qts through the shifter.
Funny story, I rebuilt a Ford Festiva engine and I drained and filled the manual transmission as well. Known what it took? No exaggeration, it took thin ass ATF and was only like 1.7 qts...... I was like wut???

 

I also fill through the shifter. Way easier than fumbling with those pumps which just piss me off.

Have someone to verify when it starts to come out of the fill hole.

like how much does the gear oil cost? I use MT90...like $60 per gallon. Get close to 2 uses per gallon if I remember right.

 

I use MT-90 and I noticed a difference. This task is so damn easy, I try not to laugh when people blow it out of proportion.

 

Wow that's crazy! That's such a small amount. I would be concerned thinking whether or not I drained everything out or trying to figure out if I'm pouring it correctly. I just can't get over the fact that it takes that little amount of gear oil. I've heard of trucks that take 10 quarts for an automatic transmission.

 

yeah autos are a different beast. Require much more fluid than manuals transmissions do gear oil.

 

MT's are not very hard on fluid relatively speaking. Not a pump system. Doesn't take much at all.

Differentials OTOH REALLY don't hold much, have extreme heat, extreme pressure.

 

The auto in my F350 takes 19(!!!!) Quarts

Yikes! That's definitely expensive if you flush out all of the transmission fluid.

 

But being a Ford it won't last long enough to need a fluid change

 

Last night while I was at work on nights. I specifically bought a 32 ounce bottle of ARCHOIL 9100 for the diffs, transfer case, trans etc. I filled the rear diff, which was low as I have read a lot on TW. I pulled the fill on the transfer case and it was full, so I got one good squirt about 50ml in the t-case. The transmission was low I put about 150ml in it before it was coming out of the fill. Front diff I didn’t have the hex on me so next time I’m on nights.

long story, however my drive home this morning I noticed immediately how smooth and buttery the shifts were. I’m used to the cold slightly stiff shifting for a few miles. So all I can say is what a difference in shifts. I actually have to get used to it because I’m easy on all my man trans. So with that being said I have used 9100 for a few years in my motor oil including my 7.3 power stroke. I’m impressed.
