    Gotcha.
Similar reasoning why I moved from a fork mount to a tray style hitch rack.

Maybe zip tie them into tight coils first and see how it works? Not a bad idea not bothering with the straps considering how you use the pad and cover. My bikes don’t wedge onto the gate very well due to the width—I have to strap them down with a piece of webbing so they don’t lean over on turns/bumps. So I’m less inclined to forgo the straps and invite more slop.

Just to clarify, I will still use the strap that secures my bike to the tailgate pad. I'm considering cutting the straps that secure the tailgate pad to the tailgate. I'm not sure if I'd risk zip tying them into tight coils. If the coil flaps around in the wind the zip tie might scratch my tailgate paint. I could probably tuck the straps under the pad up and over my tailgate to try it out first, although I'm not sure how I'll be able to see how much the back side of the tailgate pad is moving in the wind on the highway from the driver seat of my truck.

Ditch the static post and get a nice dropper. So much more fun and safe. You can thank me later.

Wait you just broke a saddle rail? Not a moving part. For my terrain a dropper is a game changer. Get a modern post. They are reliable now and they dont use some BS rail clamp that shears rails off.

Never really knew why people threw their money at these. A plush blanket folded nicely does the job quite well with some bungees holding the bike in place in the bed. Easy to setup/remove. Call me cheap, but hey money is more valuable in my pockets than theirs

Because 99.99% of the homemade ones look like homebrew ass (just my opinion). I get the frugality and practicality of it, but I'm not taking my good looking taco and attaching a junk show to the rear.

This is good enough for me. The tailgate pads to me are just one more thing to worry about getting stolen. Unless your constantly taking it on/off.

do you have first or second hand experience of this actually happening? I could see someone stealing the whole tailgate or a bike off your tailgate but the pad? doesn't seem profitable even though they are expensive for what they are.

My raceface pad has a metal grommet in it for a cable lock that is supposedly for security.
