I still don't get it??? New V6 for 2011 Tundra

Why does Toyota keep shafting the Tacoma? The FJ, 4 Runner, and now the 2011 Tundra all get the new dual VVT-1 270hp V6! But the Tacoma that outsells of those vehicles still gets the old 4.0 V6?

yes, thats true. Im sure the next gen will have the new dual VVTi V6, I just think its odd that they put in other current generation vehicles but no the Tacoma.

 

Because the Tacoma doesn't *need* a more powerful engine.

It would be *nice*. But it's not strictly necessary.

Personally, I'd rather ToMoCo offer the 4.6L V8 as an upsell rather than the 6 cylinder. But as long as Tacoma is the sales leader, they'll change very little.

What's really surprising to me is that Toyota is still offering a V6 in the Tundra at all. I guess they want to cash in on a little extra margin from both V8s rather than just the 5.7L.

 

I'm happy with the size of my engine, and my uncle says that the 4.0 v6 in the Tacoma is the most reliable engineout there and he is a mechanic at Toyota for over 30yrs.

 

Answered your own question. Until people start buying other trucks instead, they don't really feel any sense of urgency.

 

They are probably waiting for the 3rd Gen to put it in. They probably don't want to spend any money on this, it's selling so they'll keep it the same.

 

This V6, that V6 who gives a shit. I'll drool over a diesel Tacoma but that's far away. As it stands, my current V6 does just fine with it's decent power and 18 mpg.

 

Better yet, an E85 selectable Hybrid with a rechargeable battery cell and a solar panel covered roof. Have the real power when needed, but for the daily use, minimize fuel consumption. Imagine how many barrels of actual gasoline would be saved.

That or swap the E85 for Bio-Diesel.

 

I know you're just playing with me, but I like the idea of minimizing the need for actual gas.

It'd be nice to use an electrical source whenever possible, but have the "Selectable" option for when you needed the raw power of a combustion engine. I know that these 'extra' sources of power would also add weight and have other adverse effects, but it's fun to dream. Besides, my truck is my daily driver and therefore only needs the 'tough-guy' power on occasion.

I've got a Matrix for gas sipping stuff. When I need power for truck stuff, I want the engine to drink all it wants.

If they put the new dual cam 4.0 Liter in it then the price would jump another $1,200 on top of the 25-34K your gonna spend for the truck in the first place. Toyota's biggest problem with the Tacoma is the fact that its so expensive compared to the compition. Granted its by fare better but at what price??? For the money you pay for a good Taco you could bump that up another 3-4 grand and pick up a full size tundra or even a descent Chevy.

Another thing to think about is the fact that if they boosted the HP to 270 then Nissan and Chevy would have to boost there trucks too to keep them selling. What if Nissan or Chevy came out with a completely new truck a couple years before the Gen 3 Tacoma was released? Toyota would see a huge drop in their sales for those last couple years.

Nah. Car companies can't just suddenly decide to release a new platform. It takes several years of R&D and design, testing, and facility tooling to release a new model. It's not like manufacturers can do it whenever they like. The Gen 3 Tacoma, and its competition, have been in development for a couple years now and it's too late for anyone to change course.

 

tell me this...where does 1/2 of this electricity come from...oh, thats right...coal!! you may not be pumping it in your tank, but it takes crude to make that electricity your charging your vehicle w/...why not just cut out the middle man and run the gas directly!!

concerning the OP...why, this engine is just fine! only thing i would really like is the numerous mentioned diesel, but we all can dream right!

Not only does the new dual VVT-1 270hp V6 have more HP, it also gets better gas mileage.
Just check out the options you can get on the FJ, 4 runner, and Tundra. Power seats, heated seats, Leather, heated mirrors, stereo w/10 speakers including subwoofer and 8 channel 440W amplifier, or 15 speakers with 16L woofer box, 6-spd automatic w/overdrive. And the poor Tacoma can't even get a locking tailgate. You have to go aftermarket to lock tailgate.
Oh well, I am not complaining, just stating the obvious.

I hear ya, but I'd prefer not have to make 2 car payments unless the 2nd is a nice sports car. And I also prefer not double my car insurance just to save money on gas. Plus, no offence, but I MUCH rather drive my truck around than a Matrix or the like. If I could simply flip a switch into "Hippy-Mode" and get to work and back primarily on an electrical source, that'd be pretty cool. Probably unrealistic, but cool

I'm just having fun, but I still have to disagree to a large degree (tongue twister, I know). Indeed, the majority of our power plants are Coal powered, but my un-educated assumption is that those power plants are more efficient than our dime-a-dozen auto-engines. Not to mention the increasing number of Nuclear power plants.

But in all honesty, that's beside the point. That only hits on ONE of the add-ons I mentioned ---> "Rechargeable".

What about the Hybrid source that relies on using your own vehicles braking power to recharge the cell. Or how about the solar cell? Sure, it'd probably only bring in enough energy to power a few small accessories, but we all know that running your A/C can rob you of HP. Might be useful to have that powered by a solar cell. Seems funny to imagine using the suns power to cool you down, I know. But most of all, I mentioned using E85 or Bio-Diesel. Are you telling me that WOULDN'T cut down on need for oil?

Anyway, I'm not a tree-hugger and I'd have to admit, I really don't pay near enough attention to the news as I should. So, I'm probably largely ignorant to the ramification of our current fuel needs and what could also happen if we reduced our usage. However, I'm all for innovation and using materials that are either renewable or at the least less hazardous to our environment.

But alas, I'm as guilty as anyone. I'm the guy that throws away his glass beer bottles because the guys that recycle refuse to pick them up (last time I had them in my recycling bin the ended up thrown in my yard).
