PS fluid is generally ATF / hydraulic fluid. A lot of cars used ATF in manual transmissions. The T case is essentially a sort of 2spd MT. Therefore . . .

On the particular fluid thing, it is often just a matter of it being worth it to the aftermarket to pursue. Back in the failing Chrysler AT days, they had their own ATF that was slightly less grippy than the widely used GM and Ford ATFs. It was said that the valve bodies fried trying to constantly adjust when faced with GM / Ford ATF. I had to buy the Chrysler stuff at the dealer for the first bunch of years, then the aftermarket finally started producing it once there were enough on the road to justify it.

Given that we only need a liter of the stuff every 30k, 60k, or whenever, it may not make sense to pursue.

Also, the daughter's Mazda requires Mazda PS fluid and FL22 coolant. I'm on the struggle bus trying to find compatibility of those. Since it was just one quart, I bought their PS fluid. It looks like I can flush and use regular ethylene glycol at 2yr intervals. Not sure on that one yet, but I can't abide $30+ for a gallon of 50/50.

Not to mention the Subaru and Redline only ATF fluid in the wife's Forester.

 

Any chance the Castrol 75w for
Range/Land Rover/cruiser manual trans oil is suitable a simple Google search for Castrol 75w brings it up on E bay .... I am partial to running one brand in the whole vehicle gear/engine / trans

Why? Why not use the right stuff in each location rather than trying to jury-rig it so all the bottles in your garage are the same colour?

Honest question because I’ve never understood this type of thinking, but understand a lot of people think this way.

You are completely correct it's a mental thing .... It stands to reason that even some of the Toyota fluids such as the coolant and other grease and fluids may very well be from companies other than Exxon Mobil just in a Toyota bottle

 

Here’s my reason for looking. I’ve said this over and over, I do not like the fact that a manufacturer(not just Toyota, they’re all guilty of it) putting their customers into a corner with its “dealer only” type of products and/or service. If I can get 60k out of a 75$ can of fluid, about 2 years for me, that’s not a bad cost average. Even yearly it’s not that bad. I had some a/c work done around 37k and told them to do diff’s and t-case while in shop ( I should’ve just bought a new truck), my fault for not paying close attention when they quoted price. Now I’m closing in on 90k so I’m changing fluids and don’t like what I’m being told, stubborn that way sometimes. I also like supporting smaller independent businesses when possible, you know, the ones that take time to speak to you if you have questions about their products

 

Well for what it’s worth, I was just told that the LF75W is a gl-4 with extra anti-ware additives, this is some of what I wanted to know. So the dealerships do not need to be using gl-5 fluids in t-case. I was also told that Red Line 70w75 would be a suitable match for use in transfer case as well.

I forwarded the ExxonMobil SDS for the LF75W that @Jeff Lange posted up along with the VOA of the LF75W to Red Line and the response was what I stated. Now, I hope all of you don’t go blowing up David’s email and/or phone. Here’s the email for verification. All I ask is to Please be respectful of his responding to me

 

I’m going to try the Red Line, I have both the 70w75 MT-LV and the Can-O-Gold só I can swap out if needed. I’ll give updates as I go.

 

Gl-4 is not just low-grade Gl-5 anymore. GL-4 is harder to procure these days. It has been brought back to the market when it was found that the “improved” additives in Gl-5 destroy yellow metals in manual transmissions that use bronze synchronizers. You have to put effort into finding Gl-4 gear oil. The bulk jobber crap is all GL-5 these days.

 

So..... what are you suggesting here?

 

That would match up with what I found on the Motul website. Motul's Multi-DCTF is listed as a GL-4 and shows up as compatible for the Taco T-case.

 

The suggestion from the previous was that Toyota is speccing a GL-4 because it is cheaper (at least that’s what I gathered). It’s likely to protect the single bronze synchronizer in the T-case.
