What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Just a thought, Im sure most 03-04 owners know about the ETCSi throttle body that costs $1000 for the whole unit. Im wondering it its at all possible to swap out the throttle body + wire harness + ecu from a 01-02 to avoid paying big$$$ when mine shits out. It would also be a preventative thing in case Toyota decides to discontinue it in 10 years or so.

 

Did you go with OEM Tundra axles when you went LT or did you get aftermarket? Just curious as it never crossed my mind until now

 

I heard people just replace the axle shaft that goes in between the CVs.

 

You need to use the stronger Tundra Inner cvs and modify them for more articulation. You'll just blow the tripods out quickly. They are not hard to modify. Just get OEM Tundra axles. I have never been able to find an aftermarket with the German Inner Cvs.

Nope. 2nd gens and 3rd gens do that. not on 1st gens.

tundra CVs have a different design which also makes them stronger. But none bothered making just axles since the tundra ones were plug n play and already stronger due to the joint design.

I figured it out. Had to pop the cap off the other side to get to the brushes.

Now the solenoid won't fit where i mounted it. Have to make a homemade bracket for it to sit on the bumper or just use industrial Velcro lol

 

This is the case with many aftermarket CV axles. A few years ago, I found a solid axle brand though the outer boots would only last 3 to 5 years. So I bought new axles from that brand and immediately rebooted with outer OEM boots. So far this combo has lasted for over 3 years and still running.

 

Cleaned MAF sensor, throttle response much better. Short term and long term fuel trim numbers are low and steady. Also did the Honda Oddessy windshield nozzle upgrade. Nice and easy mod, snaps right in and provides a wide spray instead of the OEM streams like from a kids toy squirt gun.

 

Can you use a pick and push back each brush from the other side one at a time while applying pressure
from the coil come through? Or can the brushes be removed and reinstalled after the center section is slide in?

 

A year after my engine swap my throttle body went out. I went from an 02 2.7 to a 03 3.4 You'll bite off more then you can chew trying to swap out the parts to avaoid getting another throttle body. Your best bet is to just pick up a salvage yard throttle body. I found one for 150.00 on Car-Parts.com So far it's been working fine. A buddy (Toyota Dealer Mechanic of 20+ years) told me it's rare for a throttle body to go out so your chances on getting a bad one through buying used is slim to none. What ever route you take good luck bud.

Is this possible to do to stock or after market Tacoma axels??
I have some nappa cv's and they do bind at full droop. It would be nice to be able to fix it.They have held up so far.but..I guess I really need to reboot my oem's.

 

Long Beach Toyota here in SoCal. But I saw them from several other dealerships online when I was looking, it's just the shipping cost from most of them would negate the savings so luckily I found a good deal on one only 30 miles away.

Weird thing though is their website didn't specify manual hub or ADD axle when I ordered, but the part number was correct, so I placed it. Of course they sent me a manual hub CV. So I called them and they sent me an ADD reman instead. Not sure why they don't make it clear online but it might be best to call before placing the order to make sure you get the one you need.

the ADD remans look like this...the green decal is taken off and replaced with a silver Toyota logo sticker.

I’ve been thinking about this lately. Mine decided to sick at full throttle about a week ago and then wouldn’t respond after I got the vehicle shut off and stopped. Cleared the code, cleaned the connections and went back to driving with no problems since, but it did make me uneasy about it.

 

I’ve been looking at those lights for ditch lights. Do they throw light off of both sides of the light? How’s the glare off of the hood?

 

Not sure. Its the inner cup that you grind out for the tulip part. But I think its the outer that tends to bind on the aftermarket ones.
