A little something every chance we get.

I did some reading this morning during coffee time, and even though a lot of places want to find an engine lean code, the most common thing that kept appearing, would not necessarily be obvious, and could be caused by just bumping any "old" hose - VACUUM leak? Really makes mileage blow, would not seem mechanical, and definitely makes things feel anemic? And man people found leaks all over the place. But a squirt bottle after a quick gauge check....

No complaints! I stayed inside and challenged my students to really use their brains today. I enjoy engaged lessons like that a lot.

It very well could be, sounds similar. This is going to be a new one for me on this truck as I’ve never done any work on the engine besides the snorkel and spark plugs. Where would you start? What would you do to find a leak?

I’m not opposed to it, I’ve seen the videos with the borescope, that shit works!

No kidding! I’ve seen guys in 37’s do better. If that’s what it’s going to be I’ll just buy the 37’s now!

I never would have thought they cost what they do. I always thought they were way out of my budget. My next shop will definitely have one!

Typically I just lurk... but damn son. That's like 8.5mpg if my mental mathz are correct. That's what I get... in the hill country with a whimp motor and stock gears pushing 35s

As do i! Those are the kind that i learn the most from. I have to be engaged for it to stick for me

I would start by having the hood open and let the truck idle. Start going around the engine bay and listen for any hissing noises and any hoses that look like they may have been dislodged, or are out of place.

next id turn the truck off and start looking for hoses that could be getting dried out. Sometimes the ends of the hoses get dry and crack right near the ends where they connect, which can cause leaks. id take your time and take off each one of the easily accessible vacuum hoses one by one and inspect and then reinstall before moving to the next one.

Also, while having the truck running again, you can get some throttle body/intake cleaner and spray it around areas that have rubber hose or seals and if there is a vacuum leak, it will suck that in and the idle will fluctuate/increase. If the idle remains the same when spraying, then theres no leak. Let me know if you have any questions or need any pics. I have a 4.0 too and can get some pics for reference if needed

Good advise here. Could be spark plugs as well. I'd start there (plugs) then check for leaks personally.

Good point! Plugs are a solid starting point!

I get 12-13 in Colorado mountains and 15-16 combined here on 35s and stock gears. Something is not right.

Agreed. Just need to find out what it might be. I’ll pull and check the plugs, verify they’re gapped correctly and see what they have to say.

I’ll clean the MAF sensor and run some seafoam through it as well just for funsies

Or hopefully it explodes and I can do my diesel swap. Either way I need it to get a lot better or as bad as possible.
