Rattling can bring them in or run them off, just depends on what kind of mood they’re in.

    Stock as shit!
Man it's never worked for me and a bunch of old timers here that have been doing it for a long time say to leave them at home. I'll take their word for it. I fought their suggestions and tried it a few times only to end up heartbroken.

In MD I had a grunt call and it just scared them off...then I had a different grunt call and it brought a nice little spike in, which I shot with my bow...Ive never had luck with rattling...

I use to process them myself, got tired of messing with them, don't really like it enough to pay someone to do it.
Usually I give a guy one in Dec or Jan and he gives me a couple of sticks of jalapeno and cheese summer sausage. That's really all I want.

Thanks. That one is from November 2012. Almost didn't shoot him and by almost I mean I had planned on hunting another stand that morning. The Sunday before my son and I had hung a stand in a neat little spot. Lotta rubs and scrapes. The following Tuesday I'm running just a tad late, park, gear up, about 100 yards into the trail I realize some asshole pulled my reflective tacks. Now this stand is another 400-500 yards into the woods. I decided to hunt my one other spot at the opposite end of the property. Drive the two miles, park, hoof it up the hill. It's now starting to get daylight. Hang my doe estrous soaked scent wicks, hang my climbing sticks. Quickly climb and get settled in. I'm sweaty, grumpy and pissed. I hate people screwing with my stuff. About 8am I hear that "noise" I look behind and this big six is coming in, lip curling. Looks like he's going to pass on my left. But he stops about 15 yards out and continues. He's now at my 4 o'clock. I have to turn completely to my right. Trying to slowly pivot and find the tag end of my safety line is hung up on my broadhead. So I'm trying to turn, get my arrow loose, while this buck is 15 yards away. Thank God he was focused on the doe urine and not the idiot in the tree having a seizure. Finally get into position. He's still oblivious. The Rocket Sidewinder caught him perfectly. He took off for the hillside and dropped right on the dirt road. In the pic, I'm parked just outta view, around the bend. To finish off this wonderfully screwed up perfect morning, when I was loading him into the back of the truck, I got the front half onto the tailgate, as I reached to grip the rope again, his body slid off and his rack raked the outside of the tailgate. Never buffed out the scratches.

I do mix some light grunting in with the bleats during the rut. Estrous bleats are my go to in November. I've had deer come crashing through the woods (buck and doe both) looking for it. Sound like a damn herd of cattle stampeding.

Rattling has never worked for me in southeast PA. Now grunt call and a Primos Can call. They are always in my pack. I have more success with the grunt call. I'm pretty sure the buck I shot this year came into a few low grunts. I know for certain the one last year did. It was only a minute or two after I gave some fairly long loud (it was windy) grunts. He came in, hair up on his back, head swiveling back and forth, looking for a fight.

I've had bucks come running in while I was climbing a tree. I think the scraping sound of a climber (I try to be as quiet as possible) and just the noise in general can make em antsy if they're in the mood for a fight.
One night, many years ago, it was too dark to shoot but I could still see 5 or 10 yards or so. I was putting my arrow back in my quiver and it rattled against the other arrows and a smallish buck came from I don't know where and ran to the base of my tree all pissed off like. That was pretty cool.

We've only had some dustings during archery season, maybe and inch at most. It sure is cool when it does.
