How come you are worried what a gen costs when you buy a brand new truck.

You can prob find someone to finance it for 60 months also.

Are you serious? You're not getting 120VAC out of an automotive alternator just because you don't put it through a rectifier.

And yet all great inventions have issues with those in the beginning. Nothing we’ve discussed here breaks any laws of physics....maybe common sense.

You can also gen a 4400 watt gas powered generator at harbour freight for cheaper than that car generator thing you posted about and have enough money left over for some plywood and foam to make a cubicle to deaden the sound from it running.

Yea? Why not? I have a DC motor on my desk that 120v. If I back drive it, I’ll get 120v generator. I don’t see what would stop someone from creating a version that is packaged as an alternator.

Yes, please show us modifying a 12VDC alternator to generate 120VAC. Do you know what a diode or rectifier are? Do you know what an armature or stator is? Do you know what a pole in a generator is?

Yes, and if you really understand power generation I don't know why you're trying to turn an automotive alternator into an AC generator. Also, what is the 120VDC motor on your desk and how much current drives it?

There seem to be a lot of ppl on YouTube that have made exactly what we are discussing. I haven’t personally verified any of them. But there’s enough of them that they must be into something.

Ok, and how many of those people use an alternator in their truck? I feel like you don't actually know that much about power generation.

It maxes out at about 40amps. So maybe just shy of 5kW.

I don’t. Im a mechanical engineer that designs power tools. I only know basic EE stuff. But it doesn’t really sound like you do either. Just sounds like you want to argue.

You have a 5kW motor on your desk? What does it do for you there?

No, that's actually not true at all. I've operated the electric plant of a nuclear powered submarine though.

    It’s a sample motor for a project.

But you don’t have an electrical engineering degree? And you’ve never designed motors, generators, or transformers for a living?

Can we just agree that neither of us knows shit and no one really plans to do any of these things though they “might” work?

No, but I've operated plenty of electrical switchgear and generating eqiupment and understand power generation and distribution.

Ok. Sounds cool. But I think that effectively leaves us both in the position of knowing basically about the same amount about designing a generator....which isn’t much.
