No, not really. Especially not if you think it's cheaper to use a truck to generate AC for a house.

    1. Wait until next April, if you can. Save up until then.

    2. The Texas storm preparedness weekend starts on April 27. Emergency supplies, including generators, are tax free for that one weekend a year.

    3. Buy a generator, 3500 watt minimum. It's enough to plug in your fridge during the day and a cheap window unit A/C at night.

Bonus: if you can, save up a little more to get the "camping" generator. They run almost double as a cheap construction generator, but they produce a cleaner sine wave, and a crap ton less noise. That's essential if you or your neighbors want to sleep at night or if you want to run sensitive electronics.

Champion is that brand that I was hoping to score, but I wound up getting a Wen off Amazon during the storm tax weekend. Got a great deal on it and it starts right up every time.

I think some guy mentioned in here that the generators rev there selves up when they have more of a load on them, now that I think about it the gas welder I've used did that too and it would probably be kind of hard to do that with the truck unless you got a truck monkey or something to push the gas down for you when you turned the TV on.

Alright. Let’s start at the beginning guys, and use our resources to think this through.

I have a Toyota Alt. What do I need to do to get power out of it

Op said he knows little about generators. Perhaps one option, as solicited, is the “wait for the power to return” option. I might choose a different path for myself. :sawzall:

This guys probably the engineer since hes throwing around terms like cleaner sine waves. Those will make your tv run cooler.
And everybody will know you have the cleanest sine waves in town.
But for real I've had to help install power filters on some stuff to clean up the sine waves because it had dirty power coming in and it kept frying electric motors.

Shut your mouth! It’s impossible to get electricity from the whirly thing on your truck that makes electrons move.

No one said that, it's just dumb and inefficient to convert a standard automotive alternator in your truck to generate AC for a house. But please, use your truck for this purpose.

I never said it was practical. I still think it’s interesting and possible.

The battery from a Prius, preferably a totaled one where no one got hurt, heck a whole container shipwreck full of them (sans injury to crew) would be a good start to Prius’s, but I digress...

I don’t think that will help. We’re not trying to make it smell better.

Geochemist, actually. We get along with engineers like orange juice and toothpaste. :crapstorm:

But I've learned enough from the school of hard knocks that if you try to run an air con with cheap power, you're going to be buying a new air conditioner soon.

If you put on some fleece pajama pants and rub your but around in the seat in the winter time somebody could put a multimeter on your nipples and check the voltage across them.

Over 20,000 volts can be easily generated by static electricity...
