    Long story short,

Im in the middle of a 3300km road trip, and my tailgate won't open now after I had used it some days ago. Ive thawed it out completely, don't have a key and my tonneau cover is down and locked so I can't access the panels from the inside.

Any suggestions before I put a chainsaw through the cover?

How are you starting the truck if you don’t have a key? (Or do you have Meso minimalist keyfob)

other than use the key inside the keyfob, most tonneaus can be opened with the right prybars.

What kind of cover? if it's a trifold you can try the coat hanger trick

Yeah, Push Start and those keys don't open the tailgate. Local dealer was going to charge an arm and a leg for a key to be cut for the gate so I said screw it and did the Pop N Lock.

Will definitely try to pry it open though. The crappy thing is...this 3300km road trip is a relocation for work so alot of my tools etc are in the box I was ready to hack the cover apart but the Customs guys didn't even care to come out and even look at what I was hauling cause of the snow and cold..even with a 6x12 UHAUL behind me.

yes they do. Only 2016 they don’t open the tailgate, all other years they do. Your profile says 2019.

How does it open? it'll only work if it has the pull cables to unlatch it, you slide it in under the weather strip and try to hook the cable and pull it back

Your key that's in the fob should work on the tailgate. I know mine does.

Unless it's an early third gen, I think the tailgate was keyed different than the doors

Or, and this is a long shot, push one of the storage boxes from the outside in. No idea how hard it would be but I'd cut into that before anything else. Then open the tonneau

The lock just works on 12 volt power right? Have never put onw of these in, but Isn't there a quick disconnect after the tailgate? Technically shouldn't the OP be able to disconnect there and touch the leads to a battery to open it up? Unless of course the actuator is the problem.... if the problem is in the connections at the kick panel or somewhere between this may get him in.

Idk what year you have but I can confirm the mini key (slid inside the main fob) unlocks my '19 tailgate

Not a bad idea. Disconnect from in the cab and use a Noco battery jumper.

My pop'n'lock froze last winter and the actuator rod got bent. I guess it bent enough so that it either wouldn't lock or wouldn't unlock. Still made the horrific clunk when the keyfob was pressed though.
I had to use the little key in the fob to lock and unlock the tailgate. It was quite stiff in the cold trying to use the tiny (and flimsy looking) fob key.

This is exactly what happened. I grabbed a hockey stick from the UHAUL and had my girlfriend yank the cable on the tonneau after I pried it up and I found my Torx to open the plastic. That being said the rod is bent and the actuator is hardly moving so Im sure its fudged. My truck is actually a 2018 and rest assured I tried every which way that key could or could not go in the hole. It doesn't, not sure if Canadian models are different?

Edit: I also bought this truck used so the previous owner could have had issues or even changed the lock on the gate...either way Im 110% sure none of my keys work in the tailgate.

Im going to see if a dealer close by can just cut me a key or change out the entire lock cylinder with a key that works because Im 110% sure my fob doesn't work in there. My girlfriend tried it and a guy in a Tundra that pulled up in front of me also gave it a whirl

Just unlock it manually (from inside the tailgate) for now and get on Amazon to buy a few spare actuators. They are cheap. In 1-2 days you’ll be back in business. Sounds like your wiring is already done and good.
I have a 2016 and it has a separate key that I keep in the center console, but since I installed the “pop n lock” by KTJO, I have not used it.
