I just drove a 2nd gen Tacoma (2013 with Auto/RWD) from a local buy here/pay here lot. It has ~89K miles and looks like it is in good shape (cosmetics, about what I wold expect for a truck its age and it stops/starts/runs well). The price is about what most pricing sites would predict for retail. The car has no obvious "red flags" and the dealer seems pretty honest. I am bringing it into a Toyota dealership for a pre-sale inspection. Anything I should pay particular attention to before I decide to buy or not? I have owned Toyotas before, but never a Tacoma. PS This will be for my wife, so the safety stuff must be perfect.
    Cheers,

    Frame rust is #1

    How much is it?

~$14K FL car, so rust will hopefully not be an issue.

Frame rust would be the biggest concern. As long as the vehicle is thoroughly inspected, you shouldn't have many issues.
Has the Tacoma al ways been in Florida??

The rust usually starts inside the frame from trapped salt etc, and works it's way outwards.

Yes, the car has only been titled in FL according to the Carfax.
Thanks for the info. I didn't see any corrosion when I did a quick inspection. We will see what the Toyota dealer finds once it is on the lift.
Any upgrades that I should consider for the 2013. This one has an aftermarket rearview camera.
    Cheers,

Unless it was driven on the beach you should be fine with a Florida truck but have the Toyota guy check inside the frame to be sure.

I personally don't think that looks bad at all. Get underneath and check near the front cats. There's a hot spot there and tends to works its way through the frame. Thats where mine failed.

Just a quick update. We ended up buying the 2013 Tacoma. Presale inspection did not uncover any major issues.
Looking forward to being a part of the community here.

Clean looking truck!. Just an FYI - keep in mind that the suspension on your 5 lug Tacoma is different than the 6 lugs if you ever plan on lifting it. You are limited in your options due to the rear springs being under the axle but can still have a mild lift and tires upgrade if you prefer. There is a thread on TW regarding lifting a 5 lugger. Welcome to TW!

Thanks. I'm sure I will have lots of questions once I start digging into the vehicle. It sounds like this place will be a great resource.
I started ordering some bits and pieces to clean up some of the trim and interior. I also just replaced the cabin air filter. With <90K miles, this truck
should be on the road for many years to come.

    Is it a 4 or a 6cylinder?

Thanks. Needs a little TLC, but it shouldn't be too difficult to get it squared away.
No upgrades currently planned, but I may look into some new wheels at some point.

Clean little truck, congrats. Those 4 poppers are damn near bullet proof. With some TLC an regular maintenance, it's got a long life ahead of it. A bunch are out there with 200K+ and still ticking...

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Throw some new plugs in it, soon and switch out the rear diff oil to synthetic and you should be good to go. Congrats and welcome to TW!
