Regear 2nd gen - 4.88 vs 5.29 gears

All v6 second gens came with factory 3.73s
All i4 prerunner/4wd 2.7L second gens came with factory 4.10s

 

Hmmm, well changes everything. Let me check that and I’ll do some calculating. There was a thread on gear the other day that had this exact discussion. It had some good info. I’ll see if I can find it.

 

Even the 6speed manual? I knew the autos all had 3.73s

Yes, all 6spd manuals had 3.73s. I took the 4.10s out of my 4 banger and put them in my v6 though, so you could do that for a cheaper regear. I bought a front diff out of a wrecked 4 cyl for the front regear

 

Hey Baggett, what size tires did you start with, what will it take to get you back to where you started? & Bannerman, if I read your post right, the 6 spd manual 4 is OD that means 5th, & 6th are taller & taller. I never knew any trans where 1/2 the gears were OD.

I think there's a little more to it than trying to match the stock RPM of the engine. The taller the tire and the taller the lift the more wind resistance there will be and the more higher RPM's will help, especially if pulling an additional load like a trailer that will not only increase the total weight but will also increase the wind resistance. So just because the RPM's match stock you're going to have much lower acceleration rates.

The higher RPM's that are being discussed in here aren't going to do anything adverse to the engine and will actually help the engine survive higher loads placed on it. Lugging a gasoline engine will destroy it far quicker than too high of RPM's (considering the RPM ranges being discussed).

 

Not saying you’re wrong, just curious because don’t know, what’s so bad about lugging from a mechanical standpoint?

 

I have the A750F -- 5 gears. I think want to go 4.56 based on everything I read. I had 265/60R18, went to 295/65R18 Duratracs. This supposedly is a 33.1" but I got out the tape measure and I have 32.25" tires (after 5 months of use).

 

"Per the TW tire size calculator" your orig. tires were 30.5 dia W/ 3.73 gear @ 70 mph. = 2013 rpm. Your new tires are 33.1 dia. w/ 4.11 gear @ 70 mph. = 2044 rpm. Were you satisfied with your Taco, before the tire change? If you go to a 4.11, you would be very close to where you were orig. The 4.56 would put you appx. 255 rpm. above where you were orig., with 4.88 you would be appx. 414 above where you were orig., & with the 5.29 about 618 above. Just a little more confusion to add to the decision making.

 

Yeah I hear you. I think they don't make 4.11 in 4x4 front diff -- only made in rear. I am also pulling a 22ft travel trailer. I think 4.56 is the correct move for me. Thanks!

4 cylinder 4WD Tacoma has 4.10 I believe.

 

Its an auto trans so will downshift before lugging down rpms - even if put in 4th it will downshift when rpms drop.
Plus nothing wrong with pulling up a long grade in 3rd as we all don't need to go 65-70 over long passes - slow down, relax, give the Tacoma a break (so it won't get the trans too hot). Its not a 3/4 ton diesel turbo tow rig.

 

A lot of info here I can only comment on my experience.
My truck is auto and heavy AF with 285/75/17 and I have 4.56. It drives like it did stock keeps OD going up hills and going down the hwy sure the rpms are a little higher but mpg isn’t bad.
At 70 I’m cruising about 2300. I would have faith towing a trailer 4000lbs or less but stopping is another thing.

 

After reading thru this stuff again, I think maybe some are talking driving in OD & others are talking driving in 5, as recommended for towing trailers. Just say'in you'll run appx. 800 rpm. higher in 5 than OD (6).

 

When pulling a fairly heavy trailer up a huge hill I'd run my (gasoline) engine at 4K RPM all the way up far before trying it at 2K RPM. It's easier on everything within the drivetrain. Same for downhill and the brakes will thank me for that.

 

2nd gen/2013 automatics don't have a 6th gear. Only 3rd gen automatics have 6th.

 

I went ahead and pulled the trigger and put a deposit down on Yukon 4.56 gears. $2,250 out the door. Several other shops were $2,500. Gears are expensive no matter how you slice it. Anyhow, ready for the gears to help with everything!

Thanks for all the help! And to think I was getting quotes on 5.29 gears. That would have been so wrong if I installed those on my 2013 since it doesn't have 6th gear.
