Anyone experiencing this noise. Dealer says nothing to worry about and my sons 3/36 warranty is up next month. 2017 TRD Sport. Doesn’t do it all the time but sounds even worse going down the street. Your thoughts appreciated as my own 2017 4x4 with similar mileage doesn’t do it.

Could be normal noisy injectors...... I hope you don't hear "they all do it" from Toyo Service. They don't all do it.

Not sure if it’s just belt or water pump, but Better take it there before the warranty ends. I had this noise on my mustang.

Sounds like the bearings in the drive accessories turned by the serpentine belt. Start it up with the belt off 10-15 seconds to confirm as it won’t hurt. Idler pulley or alternator is my guess and not uncommon for a dry climate.

Wouldn’t do it at the dealer again this morning but I finally caught a service writer and tech that would at least listen to the video. “Ah, that’s the idler pulley. Let me see if one is in stock. Warranted”.

Only took a year and four trips including the three my son did.
    Sheesh.

    thanks all.

On one of his visits the dealer told him it was normal.

Take the belt off and start it up and see if it continues. As mentioned above, it sounds like a belt or accessory drive issue.

Well, noise is back so that wasn’t it. I’m convinced it compressor or compressor clutch related. Back to the dealer Monday.

I wasn’t there when he picked it up so I’m not sure, however, the tech seemed to be replacing a larger unit, lower drivers side of the engine.

Unfortunately, usually if we shut it off, the noise stops only to come back a day or two later.

Does the noise change at all with the compressor on or off? I'm thinking maybe the added torque from the compressor clutch engaged might change the pitch/frequency of the noise...

My son seems to think so but I have never had the truck when its doing it to play with it and it was late the other night when I took the video and didn't think to mess around with it.

    Saga continues:

dropped the taco off at the dealer today and it was actually making the racket.

they brought out a tech with a stethoscope and after 10 minutes he proclaimed the upper tensioner is the issue; because they changed the lower one last week perhaps?

He also mentioned that in the past few weeks there have been a rash of tacos in for this issue. Don’t know if rash means two, five or 20.

we’ll see how this works tomorrow.

    thanks.

Obviously drive belt related because the frequency changes when the idle kicks down. Another forgotten area is the alternator, to me that sounds a lot like it. If u get bored and feel like self diagnosing, Google how to use a screwdriver as a stethoscope. Use extreme caution.

Different vehicle, but my 07 Nissan Murano made a similar noise and it got louder over time. The a/c clutch was shot and was metal to metal. I changed out the clutch and pulley assembly. I don't know if the Tacoma's use a clutch. I haven't bought a Tacoma yet.
