$64 at the junk yard and I got a bunch of stuff for the 4R

    Trailer hitch
    Washer fluid tank
    Air intake
    Door handle
    Plastic seat trim
    Window visor

Now I still need to get a gear shifter handle and a fan shroud

Replaced everything except the drums and parking brake levers in the rear of my 4Runner. Boy was I surprised at how big of a pain in the ass those parking brake cables were to replace. Anyway, brakes are working good-ish and the parking brake holds solid on both wheels. I think it could use a new master cylinder, but they’re working okay for now. Took it to get inspected and it failed because of tape on the tail light. Not happy, but the guy was at least nice enough to tell me that if I wait 2 months for the inspection, it becomes a safety inspection only and the price goes down to $7. No emissions test on 25 year old or older vehicle. This at least gives me time to get a few other things done to it. First time out of the shop in 3 weeks!

I’ll be getting one of those next year. Buying back my first vehicle from my parents. 92 4Runner 4x4 5spd. I plan on doing a 3.4L swap down the road.

    Any big plans for yours?

Nope. Only plans for this thing are to leave it at the ranch and run it ‘til it stops. Then I’ll either scrap it or put in a 3.4.

It has low oil pressure at idle (according to the dummy gage on the dash) and has 214k miles so who knows. If it keeps truckin along that’s ideal!

Rumor has it, Toyota's don't need oil pressure.

    4Runner update:

I got new headlights, tail lights, corner marker light, trailer hitch receiver, and gear shifter installed. That shifter was such a pain in the rear and it took nearly an entire day, but it is finally all back together. I drove it around this evening and the rig drives well!

    What’s left to do:

    • I sealed up the washer fluid tank today, so tomorrow I’ll see if it still leaks.

    • New bushings for the gear shifter so it doesn’t shake around like a hot dog in a hallway.

    • Oil change

    • Maybe replace the trans pan gasket to stop the leak. I have always heard that you shouldn’t change trans fluid at high mileage if it hasn’t ever been changed and I don’t know the history on this rig. I don’t want to drop the pan and then add fresh fluid and start developing problems shifting. Anybody have any thoughts on this?

I've always been told the reason you shouldn't mess with trans fluid on older vehicles is the vacuum systems that most places use to suction fluid out. Supposedly if the operator doesn't know exactly what they're doing they can apply too much vacuum and damage seals.

Ah, I didn’t know that was the reason. Maybe I’m making a bigger deal out of it than it is.

What’s the current trans fluid look like? If it’s not really dark or burnt smelling I think just doing a fluid change will be fine. Just don’t take it anywhere for a transmission flush like @Enigma8246 said.

I modified my trailer hitch to be a “high clearance” hitch since I do not have a rear bumper. Before, the hitch was hanging down almost a foot below the bottom of the tailgate. Looks nice now, and will protect the bottom edge of the tailgate from getting bent on ledges or stumps.

I also replaced the shifter bushings for the auto shifter. There were zero remains of the old bushings, and the shifter would shake around like a hot dog in a hallway. It’s rock solid now.

Interior is 100% back together and look at that nice new shifter. It took me forever to find one, and the first one I found was the correct color!

Not pictured is my junkyard washer fluid tank that has been sealed up and ready for instal. The rear wiper is messed up and doesn’t always stop in the correct position, and you’re unable to roll the window down (and thus unable to open the tailgate) without the wiper in the stowed position. I put electrical tape over the wiper post so it won’t twist and turn on the rear wiper. Easy fix there. It took me almost 10 minutes of playing with the switch to get it to stop in the correct place. I don’t need it anyway
