Good point, it was a big hassle having to deal with the CarMax dealership located across the street from the Toyota dealership. Just as it was to change the scheduled oil and clean the car myself.

Capitol Toyota was tough do deal with they didn't even want to let me test drive a Pro unless I made a commitment to buy from them. That and all the inventory was on the other side of 87 so it was a hassle. To be fair it was during construction, but I don't even go there for service anymore because that place is a hot mess.

Also I see you have a manual too (great choice). Multiple sales reps over at Capitol told me the Pro didn't come in manual - not sure if this was ignorance, a sales tactic, or both but yeah....

The deal was for a Camry, not my Tacoma. I pre-negotiated a below invoice price thru the Costco program before they knew what I was putting down or trading in. You're right they had a bunch of vulture sales persons but I dealt with a senior fleet salesman.

My Tacoma was bought at a different dealership, again thru the Costco auto program.

Big fan of using Costco as well, especially on the 15% off parts and maintenance. At least capitol is slightly subtle with their approach. Piercey has no shame.

Took that picture last weekend while they were doing the KOB recall and looking at the squeaky clutch. This is for a 2019 with the 2020's rolling through the lot....

First negotiate the price on the new car. Never reveal you are trading a car until after you agree on a price for new truck. Then work the trade, two separate transactions. KBB, NADA and Edmonds are good starting points. However most dealerships use “galves” values which are lower than others I listed. Selling on your own my sound attractive, but you will be dealing with “tire kickers”
I’ve always traded vehicles due to ease of transaction plus sales tax savings.

It helps if your vehicle is paid full. You have more buying power. I traded my 2015 Tacoma TRD sport on 17 Pro 4runner and got almost what I paid. My truck only had a little over 12,000 miles on it. I’m doing the same with my 17 Pro same mileage on it. Getting almost what I paid for a deposit on a 2020 Army green Pro 4runner. But second guessing myself weather I want to go back to Tacoma same color in the Pro 2020. With owning your vehicle if I don’t get want I want I just walk. It does not bother me if I have to keep it.

Agreed, I don't mention the trade in until everything else is finalized. You're also probably not going to get offered what you think the true value is but you need to weigh your time and efforts but in the back of your mind know what your walk away number is if it doesn't pencil.

I'm on my 4th new vehicle in 4 yrs so you definitely lose money for sure as cars are depreciating assets. Best thing you can do is negotiate a good trade-in value on your trade as well as a good discount on the vehicle you're purchasing so you aren't getting ripped off horribly. On all my vehicles, i owed significantly less on my loans than the appraisal so I wasn't upside down like a lot of folks.

I told myself that the 4runner will be the one I keep for 8-10yrs.

Something I learned eventually: Figure out what you want and just buy the vehicle you like the 1st time. It'll be much cheaper. I settled on other vehicles that I didn't care for a variety of different reasons.

THIS. Obviously everyone has their own personal finances, but if upgrading to that new package or getting the exact color you want allowing you to keep it that much longer and enjoy it then I say go for it. It would bug me to spend countless hours a day and be pumping a monthly payment into something that I was so-so on. A little homework and confidence goes a long way with things like this. Knowledge is power.

X2 on this. When I got my first Tacoma I was trading in my GTI. I spent all my time negotiating the trade in value, but then ended up not negotiating anything off of the list price for the truck. Lesson learned for me

Nail on the head!! Put all my miles on my work car. My new 2020 Pro will take me into retirement. Why I been driving Toyota’s for years. They hold there value so well. I would not be trading up if it was not for the extras they added. I’m all about numbers when comes to vehicles.

I'm in a similar boat (minus the work car). I take transit to work, and most of what I would need a vehicle for (groceries, gym etc.) is all within a 5min walk. I put about 5000 km on my truck a year haha

If your state allows for a tax credit, then it makes a trade more attractive.
