Yes he said he’s going to use his scope to get in there and look but he didn’t sound very optimistic, I’m not sure if it’s just really hard work and he doesn’t want to do it or what’s going on

Sounds like he's not real busy and would like to install a new engine.

It’s pulling the spark plug and sticking the scope in the hole. Almost any primate could manage it.

Yes sir! The only reason I know is I had a second gen 4 banger for years. Now there is definitely a few threads out there with misinformation, so the more you know...

There are quite a few Toyota engines that ARE interference, so when in doubt it's been to confirm.

If the motor is hurt then it's time to make more hp /tq by upgrading the cyl head , upgrading cams and then boring the cyl's 0.030 over with forged hi perf pistons

Yes a head gasket can cause loss of compression. He did not say 100%, its just has to be enough so that the spark plug can't ignite the fuel. Head gasket also will cause coolant loss hence engine running hot and if the engine gets too hot the oil will get thin and start slipping through the rings and start burning oil as well. Or the rings could be worn or a number of other terrible things could have happened. Best case scenario is head gasket. Worst case dropped a valve and probably needs an engine.

OP, you can buy an inexpensive bluetooth borescope on Amazon for < $35 and have it delivered tomorrow. It sends the vid/pics to your phone in real time.

The fucking thread title itself says NO compression in cylinder 3

He said the cylinder has NO compression in the post.

One of us read the OP.

I feel like you specifically love arguing with me.

    So, you are now blocked.

I think he actually said 90% loss of compression, is that better than total loss? I’m guessing it is ...

If you post a timeline of events, you will get much more usefull responses. Pinging, running hot, burning oil... How long have these symptoms been going on? What started first?

When it lost power and would only go 20, was the temp gauge pegged?

A very simple test to tell where the compresion leak is, is to put number 3 on TDC and blow air in the spark plug hole. The air will either come out the tailpipe, intake, radiator, or crankcase.

Okay thanks, so I bought it about two years ago at 100k miles. Didn’t hear the pinging on test drive but soon after I noticed it, and then I noticed the oil was low so I added more and two weeks later low again. No oil leaks and the thermo doesn’t show it runs hot. Pinging has seemed to get a little louder over the last year but not much. It only pings in a certain rpm then if I give more throttle it stops. Car was running fine then all the sudden a few days ago it just broke down. Yea it would go like 30 mph max if I gassed it all the way and was shaking kinda. I turned it off and back on and it would die. Temp gauge was still fine. Thanks for all the help guys, I’m really praying it’s anything but a new engine

Burning X amount of oil in 2 weeks in a 100K mile Taco is highly unusual. Continuing to drive with it pinging is very bad. In my opinion, opening up the motor without further diagnosis is a waste of time. If the mechanic charges you to pull the head to confirm that the engine is junk, he's ripping you off. In your situation, there is a high probability that the engine is junk. Further testing/inspecting without disassembly should be done.
