Great to hear, my 22ft travel trailer is 3200 lbs empty/4000 lbs GVWR! Luckily it isn't huge but man before gears, I barely got to 60mph while towing it. I was concerned. Not doing that again.

Great, Don't forget to let us know how everything is working for you after completed. Good, bad, about the same, little difference, big difference just what you were expecting.

Bought it with drop bracket lift and BFGs (good find). Took it to a shop to weld on a stock frame bracket to undo the drop bracket lift and install a proper spring lift. Hoping to regear to 4.56 and put on front and rear bumpers in the future. Also, of course hoping for a supercharger someday.
BUMP! I am in the exact same situation as you. Shopping for gears for my 2013 TRD Offroad automatic with 285s and a 6" (at least) lift. I tow similar to you as well, and use as my daily driver. From the http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html site it looks like 4.56 is a really good blend, being able to cruise at 2300rpm at 70mph in 5th for commuting, or drop to 4th at 3250 to tow at 70 (when you'll probably tow at 60 anyways). I'm really excited to see how you like the 4.56 gears, as I was debating the 4.56 or the 4.88s. Please make sure you report back!

I’m also in the same situation..

I was thinking of going with ECGS third member with gear ratio I choose installed. I have a 13 Off Road Automatic and will be going to 35” tires.. daily driver and trail vehicle.. when I hit the trails I will be doing a lot of highway traveling to get to the trails.

I’ll be traveling heavy with the family (3 girls) and they need their comforts.

i called ECGS and they recommended 5.29s..I’m not sure about those?

I mean, I would think it'd be better to go with 4.88.

    I think you’d be screaming a bit with 5.29’s. 4.88 would be a good option with 35’s.

Not if you want a balance between daily driver and offroad, like myself

I wasn't able to get it in with my schedule until now but I will let you know after it is done. But yeah I think for 2nd generation, 4.56 is the best all-around for normal 33" tires.

Yeah you don't want 5.29 on a 2nd gen like we have since we only have 5 gears -- 4.88 is what you want. Since 3rd gen has a 6th gear, 5.29 is good and is where everyone is getting that number from. I have been reading reviews and watching YouTube videos, etc and the 6th gear doesn't get used a lot for 3rd gen in general so to take advantage of with 5.29 is very nice. Gearing with 5.29 is not a debate for 2nd gen though.

Seems like a shitty recommendation based on what I've read.

    1. DD, this would make me hesitate a bit on 5.29 as you be pretty low geared
    2. You mention nothing about towing. That would be my only reason for looking at 5.29 with 35s and only because i live in hilly/small mountain area.

It is all about personal preference. I want to get back to stock, maybe a little lower for me the choice is 4.30 with 35's. It puts me within 200 RPMs roughly of stock and 30.5. My problem is choosing 4.30 or 4.56. Apples to oranges as I am MT. Definitely use the calculator on the grimjeeper site and spend some time with different combinations of gears. Let us know what you decide on. For what its worth 4.88 seem to be the more popular choice for 35's and AT.

Don't get confused with the 3rd gen discussions. 4.56 id probably what you would want. Especially if its not heavy. I had 4.56 with 285/70/17 and it was perfect. with 315/70/17 its ok but leaves more to be desired. If you are not running E rated which I assume your not then 4.56 should do you solid. I am running this on my 2013 AT DCSB now with 4.56. 4.88 would be peppy but overkill.

I would agree there. 4.88 is probably the way to go here. Plenty of people run 4.88 on 2nd gens with 35 and 37s. if it was a 3rd gen easily 5.29.

    Thanks for the input.
I live in Houston, spend a lot of time on the gulf coast. Daily driving will not have hills or mountains. I Will be taking long tips to Colorado, Utah and Canada with the wife and kids.. so there will be a lot of weight; cap, tent, fridge.. and all their girl crap. But no towing, just maybe just picking up something from Home Depot or local.

No matter what I know fuel economy will be shit.. already sucks with my 285s

    4.88 seem the best balance

Good choice, 4.88 and 35's are the way to go for 2nd gen.

if you are going 35s, go with 4.88.

If you are staying with 285s, go with 4.56.

4.88s with 285s was a bit much IMO. 4.88s with 35s is perfect.

Just got the 4.56 gears done. Haven't been able to fully see how well it performs since first 500 miles is break-in period but seems about right especially when I got on the highway. RPMs seem to shift similar to stock!
