So glad I swapped mine preemptively. Easiest (but probably most expensive) is to get a Meso and drill the old one out.

Isn't it because they didn't take the adhesive cover off of the backside of the light?

Probably your third brake light but possibly the shark fin. I had both leak in my 2016 back when it was still new. The dealership replaced both antenna and light and no leaks since.
If the dealer won’t fix it you could silicone them. It’s a common problem.

I could be 100% wrong, but I thought that was the deal. Interesting if it was plastic left on the seal. That'd be hilarious actually.

I went all the way up to corporate. After a couple of weeks of back and forth they ultimately told me that “yep, the dealer said what you said they said....and we’re not covering it.”

Whatever. It just ain’t worth the hassle. I could’ve fixed it myself twice over for the time I spent with my tail feathers up. My time is too valuable to have even went that far with it. I could be playing with my kid, shooting some arrows, playing drums, fooling around on CAD, ordering new socks.

It’s a shitty design. Which is obvious looking at the consistent nature of the failure, and the commonality of it.

    Fuck it.

And, fuck you, Toyota. I didn’t break my brake light. As a defender of capitalism, I say you suck.

    Anyway.

I know, his stuff is nice but I just couldn’t justify that kind of money on a brake light. Which would be extra stupid in my case because it’s not even visible on mine. I do however thoroughly enjoy his total tails

If u do the math, might be cheaper. For me, I don't wanna even attempt to fuck w the headliner. If you're gonna outsource it, it's definitely cheaper.

Not necessarily shity design. Shity execution.
But I agree. Should be on their dime. You didn't build it, you didn't break it.

That is a good way of putting it. Still it shouldn’t be this common. If so many are breaking then either the engineers had a bad math day, or somebody went around to all the assembly plants and secretly upped the torque on every tail light installer’s driver.

Don’t you still have to drop the liner?

Probably took me two hours to drop the headliner, seal everything, then reinstall the headliner. But I had experience taking the headliner down from my old job so I was prepare. If youre going to fix a leaking rear light, I would just put a bead of gasket maker/silicon around the entire thing to fill the gap. The gap between the light and cab didn't decrease when I tightened the 3rd brake light bolts.
